A family member currently uses a Nokia C3 (on Fido with a nice talk and text plan) but is thinking of upgrading. She likes the form factor and light weight of the C3, but would like to have full Wifi capabilities with a browser, good IMAP e-mail client for Gmail, and full syncing with Google Calendar. Long standby battery life is also extremely important (the C3 excels in this area). The phone will not be used with a data plan.
I will help her buy the phone (second-hand from Craigslist or BST on these forums) and set it up for her. She would like to spend about $150 maximum.
I was thinking of the Nokia E72 but I'm not sure of the battery life or Google syncing capabilities.
I would look for a 1Ghz+ Android phone with at least 512MB of RAM. You can use it without a data plan and just have it get online/sync via WiFi. Stick with the major brands and you should be good...preferably HTC, Motorola, Samsung.
Thanks for the feedback... unfortunately most of the inexpensive Android phones have abysmal battery life, which would drive her crazy. The battery life issue is the main reason why I am leaning towards the Nokia E-series phones.
My concern with the Blackberry is that, despite their excellent battery life, their usefulness is limited if you don't have a data plan (this phone's eventual user has a talk + text plan only). When I last used BB around mid-2010, there was no way to integrate IMAP mail or sync Google calendar or contacts to the BB without a data plan. I don't know if that's changed.
