I live near, but not in, Canada. I use Tracfone wireless for US cell coverage because it's the most economical solution for my needs. They don't do business in Canada. I would like to have similar service when north of the border, and SpeakOut seems like a reasonable alternative.
I'm wondering if I can drive to a Seven Eleven in Canada, buy a SO phone, get a telephone number, etc. without triggering any alarms? Do they ask for mailing address, credit card number, or anything that would tag us as non-Canadians? Should I pay cash rather than use a US address credit card? I'm not interested in breaking any laws or treaties, I'd just like to have a reasonably priced cell phone I can use when I'm visiting Canada.
I'd be happy to buy a SO phone with 1 year of service, probably use it infrequently as we're not big talkers, but we (wifey & I) do travel in Canada a bit and feel exposed without cell coverage for emergency, making reservations, etc. It would be even greater if I could top-up annually without driving to a Seven Eleven as we are far from one in Canada.
I just activated a Speakout account, they did not require any information (they could care less if you're American)
Simply buy the phone or SIM card from 7-11, buy enough credit to last for the year, pay with cash, and set it up online.
When you come back to Canada, you can buy more credits then... not sure if they accept American credit cards for top up, but you can always try and find out.
