How is it a good deal? I can already tether for free and i have no use for any album service t-mobile offers. (I think its that 10Gb space they already have now). I upload my pics to picasa/google+ and facebook. They are offering tethering (which doesn't cost them any more. They are not giving you extra data) and "space" via some cloud service. (available for free on numerous apps and sites. Heck, my tab 10.1 came with a free 50Gb space on dropbox thanks to t-mobile and samsung!)
it might be good for people who got the message about the required $15 add-on which was only a select number. Also, if current users can upgrade the 5 gb limit to 10 gb that would be good too for people who tether already. Also, i think some of the newer phones have tethering blocked although there were workarounds. Now you don't need the workarounds.

It just seems very cheap to include tethering on just about all the smartphones i have ever owned with t-mobile (dating back to the 2g dash, My HP Ipaq didn't have tethering. lmao!!) and all of a sudden charge me $15 for something i never had to pay for, just for the fun of it. It's not like they raise your cap or anything.
edit: and by include tethering, i mean actually include the app to tether (on wm phones and later) and even include instructions in the manual. I mean actually including it in the product manual. Not "Ignoring it".
Imo its a good deal since I no longer get free tethering since I upgraded to a gs2 from my nexus one.
I love the free tethering on it. But on the gs2, tmobile forces you to use their tethering plan. I am not doing it. What I also dont like is the fact that the gs2 gives up its right to simultaneously tether while you use the data on the phone's browser. It says once you tether, you cant use tmobiles network on the phone and on the tethered device. Data gets disabled on the phone, just to enable it on the tethered device.
My nexus one would let me use the phone to surf and tether and browse on the tethered device.
If tmobile allows me to keep my 20.00 preferred android plan and upgrade from 5GB with no tethering to 10GB with free tethering, then fine.
Yup, they require data to go through the pcweb.tmobile.com apn while tethering. (Can't use 2 apn's at the same time..) Getting some type of apn manager and removing or changing the tethering apns to something like the epc apn restores the phones normal, natural state.

So thats how they force you to pay? Or is it a ROM thing, that if it doesnt detect the proper tethering plan, access is denied?

It MAY be a rom thing. It's on the newer phones with stock roms. It has a "Tethering manager" built in. It pretty much forces any tethering to go through a hidden apn. Using apn manager from the market lets you remove the entries on the amaze 4g, restoring the tethering. I hear its a bit harder on the s II. But using a third party rom (Not built on the t-mobile rom i would imagine) would fix it.
If you want to see what happens. Briefly change your default apn to pcweb.tmobile.com and open up your browser. You get some stupid page telling you to add tethering. (But you can't at that page. WTF?) This was found on the xda forums.

Yeah i see gs2 doesnt allow the app to control it. It must be a samsung thing. Att samsung also needed a factory reset.
Yeah, that seems to be the case via xda too. The amaze would delete or make whatever change you did in that app. The S II would somehow ignore it. But, if your S II is rooted, im told you can somehow uninstall/remove that tethering manager and it would fix it too. I would imagine installing a different, non-tmobile rom would fix it too since it wouldn't have the tethering manager. As that seems to be a t-mobile app.
I'm willing to bet the amaze workaround will get plugged in the next update. As usual, there are ways around anything these days.
Good move by Tmobile for people that pay extra to tether. Never liked the idea of paying for the same data twice. You should be able to use your data as you see fit.

Well those with the 2GB plans would still have to pay extra for tethering if they had a device that was blocking it. T-Mobile is only giving this to those with 5GB plans and above, and they're trying to not really publicize either per the screen shot on tmonews.
