Well, the story pretty well says why. It was a major site used for copyright infringement.

Need more proof that SOPA and PIPA aren't needed? Ask the Megaupload folks. And I guess those with similar sites will need to be more careful with what they allow to be uploaded.

It's sad because although there were warez and other illegal content in Megaupload, there were also ROM cookers, small developers and users with legitimate contents who now don't have access to their files.

The day after the Internet blackouts and protests probably wasn't the best day at take down MegaUpload. While I am against the site being taken down, there are reasons that this particular site was removed.

Megaupload often ignored removal notices from rights holders under the Digital Mellennium Copyright Act. It also doesn't have a search feature, but the owner actually owned a site that lets user search for downloads and points them to Mega Upload.

I am also not against making money, but the owner personally made more than $42 million in 2010. There is a lot of "shady" things that seemed to be going with the management

    EDIT:

Kim Dotcom, born Kim Schmitz, a 37-year-old with Finnish and German citizenship, ran inside and activated several electronic locks. When the police “neutralized” those, he barricaded himself in a safe room. Officers cut their way through to nab him, standing near a firearm that they said looked like a sawed-off shotgun.

$42 million?!? Damn! Pretty much they were getting paid to pirate software indirectly I guess. I guess the fact he owns the site that searches for pirated downloads makes the situation much more different then if he didn't. Is this really a big deal though considering there are lots of other file-sharing search websites and plenty of other hosts such as fileserve etc?

Filesonic has already pulled the pin... You can now only DL files that you uploaded... Interesting to see what some of the others will do

Megaupload made a ton of money, millions and millions, off people who couldn't figure out that they could get what they wanted for free. Right or wrong.

But the rich are often idiots. Using server farms in Virginia subjects you to US law, especially when you reside somewhere with an extradition treaty--not the the US even thinks they need that.

Actually there is a bad news about that it infected your computer with an adware that replaced all banner ads on all webpages with MegaBox ads.

so, no matter what site you visited, you would be giving MegaBox more money, and the owners of the sites you go to would get nothing.

Nah, wouldn't worry too much about it. SOPA is dead, Megaupload is unfortunate yes, but for good reason these guys were arrested.
Plus, people will come up with other ways for file sharing..cloud computing is pretty cool plus there are some softwares that allow you to do that as well. Recently I've been hearing about this Audials Anywhere thing and I'd be curious to try something like that. Don't know too much about it but if it's something similar to pcAnywhere..I'd give it a try. From what I found on the internet, Audials seems to be rather interesting. Anyway, there is also RDP and I think that things are eventually going to turn out fine.
