    Data speed while roaming

I was recently roaming in the Durham, Chapel Hill and Sanford, NC. I noticed that data seemed to be very slow, so I ran a speed test and confirmed 1X speeds:

My question is: are some roaming partners throttling speeds? My phone continued to show the 3G icon for the entire day, but I didn't get anything close to 3G speeds until I returned to a native US Cellular area (Roxboro, NC) on the way home to Virginia.

US Cellular's data coverage map shows 3G for all of the areas I visited.

    Any insight?

1: How fast is 3g? According to standards it's at least 200kbps which is what you hit.

2: Some towers have equipment that only supports certain speeds, the area you were in may only have had equipment for that speed.

3: Data speeds aren't guaranteed to any speed off us cell's network and they aren't guaranteed ON US Cell's network for that matter.

When I travel to Indianapolis (A rather large city), I am lucky to get 200kb, in some cases pages won't load at all, my brother has the same issue. I am betting that while we have a roaming agreement with Verizon, the agreement has some loophole that allows them to give us absolute least priority on their towers.

I had the same issues in Vegas, not as bad, but still way slower than what I get when in native coverage areas.

Yeah it's crap speeds everywhere I go. From my understanding, US Cellular uses Sprint as their main roaming partner. I wonder if that has anything to do with the roaming speeds?

Yep, you were roaming on Verizon. That's the typical speeds in Durham & Chapel Hill on Verizon 3G---the network is badly oversold .

    Verizon's 3G network. ............................................ AT&T's 3G network.

    Verizon's 4G network.

I remember in the past I would load the sprint PRL on my old WinMo phone and get awesome speeds when in Indy and Vegas. Anyone know how to load them in Android?

    Thanks,

I use CDMA workshop to change the PRL. I would be interested in alternate ways if anyone has them.

    Thanks for the info, everyone.

I'm wondering if I was actually roaming on Sprint instead of VZW. My brother who has VZW service was getting much better speeds that I.

I talked to the roaming department at US Cellular and the lady said that Sprint is their primary roaming partner now and you will only get Verizon coverage if Sprint is unavailable in the area you're roaming in.

I wish they would go back to Verizon because everywhere I roam the speeds of Sprint are just horrendous. She said that Verizon didn't fix some roaming issues that they had and they decided to go with Sprint as their primary roaming partner.

You really should stop giving out misinformation about VZW's network. It isn't that bad in the Triangle. Sprint is MUCH worse.

As for this problem.... Years ago when Alltel still existed (as it was) and had a reciprocal EV-DO roaming agreement with Sprint, the two carriers had a pipe between them, something like an OC-12. Data was tunneled between carriers so that while you used Sprint's EV-DO, you still terminated on Alltel's network. Eventually the tunnel got full and the data was ridiculously slow until they increased the bandwidth. I don't know if this is how Sprint and USCC set things up, but if so, this may explain why so many of you are having speed problems.

Actually, it pretty much is that bad in any area where people are. It is also not unlikely he was on Verizon, as Sprint service dies in a few fairly noticeable areas of the triangle. And, of course, this is from someone who actually lives/works in Durham/Chapel Hill.

So if you dislike it that much, why not leave? AT&T is actually great in the Triangle (one of the few places it doesn't suck).

Only place in Durham I have problems with VZW is on the Duke Medical Center campus.

Sorry for going OT everyone :-)

So we roam on Sprint now? That explains a lot. Sprint's network is horrid compared to Verizon.
