I appoligize if this has already been discussed; however, I am new to this website and I couldn't find anything more recent than 2009.
I have a smartphone with telus (Motorolla Milestone). It's just over 1 year old. My phone fell and broke. I know that physical damage is not normally covered, but when I purchased the phone, I think I remember them telling me that this protection plan covers repairs or replacement if the phone is broken. Is this true? This is the additional plan that Telus offers for $ 7.00 per month more.
I would go ask the store; however, I want to have an idea first to make sure that I don't get a wrong answer and end up accepting it.

If you subscribe to the Protection plan and have been paying the $7 per month, then yes, it would be covered. Be aware that in the store they can't really do anything for you, as it is all done through Asurion, a 3rd party company.
if you go to www.phoneclaim.com/telus you can file a claim. Be aware the is a replacement fee on that phone of $150.
If you didn't subscribe to it right away, you phone is not covered. You had until 30 days after you got the phone to get the coverage.

I think you confused the act of swapping your SIM/ESN with the act of getting an insured replacement phone under the protection plan. If you break a phone and want a new one under the device protection plan it usually costs $150 on top of the $7/mo you have been paying. If it's a 2 year old phone you can often find one on ebay/kijiji for less than the cost of the deductible and fees you had paid up to that point.

We think everyone should be able to afford a wireless phone. That's why we were the first wireless company in North America to offer pay-by-the-second airtime, and why we don't charge an activation fee. NO scary contract to sign. Immediate national coverage. And a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. Yes, it's finally time to get a wireless phone.

Possible misunderstanding, I was basing it on comments made by the user on a different post that referred to equipment exchanges. At the very least, the plan does offer cost savings if needed early on, and you can always remove the $7 cost when you no longer consider it cost effective. Nobody is forcing you to sign up or stay on it, but I would rather pay $234 for a replacement device a year in and continue on the same term than pay a $400 device balance plus the cost of a new phone to renew.

If you get the phone replaced on insurance you would get the same model back again. Certainly there are going to be cases where getting the protection plan could save you money but generally speaking it's not that hot. Some stores offer better protection plans/insurance and there are third party device insurance plans that are much better deals.
Signing an early renewal would likely be for a newer model of phone, so it has it's own advantage there.
Buying another model the same as the broken one would likely be relatively close in price a year later to the cost of this insurance in most cases. (Iphone would likely be the exception as they seem to hold value well)
Taking 10 seconds to search resulted in this insurance plan: http://www.ensquared.ca/ ($75 deductible on most phones)
Some homeowner or renter insurance plans can be extended to cover your personal electronics or may already cover it but you have to check and ask about the deductible cost.
