App permissions: how to know?

Since I have some apps with permissions which I dont understand, other people probably do, too; hope this thread will be a good place to collect info for users. I'll start with a few questions from my own apps:

1. Home replacements: I'm comparing adw, go, and launcherpro. All can use phone, read/write contacts. Using phone or contacts does not seem to involve launchers, so how come? Is Bionic different? Launcherpro also reads, edits text messages. Dont know why.

2. Moon phase: a cool app; reads phone state and identity. Huh?

3. Sound effects ringtones: nice but read/write contacts, read phone state, identity.

4. Speedtest: read phone state, identity

5. Zedge: read/write contacts

Good question. It's strange how Apps request certain permissions some time. Here's an explanation of some of the permissions:
