I just bought a SH-02D in Tokyo and had it unlocked at a docomo shop in Shinjuku. However, when I try and use my Australian Virgin sim card, it refuses to connect to the network and says 'Phone is SIM Network locked' on the lockscreen. Is there anything else that you need to do for the lock to work/setting to make foreign sims work? Or does this mean that the unlock failed? I have a receipt ~ maybe I should try and contact docomo..

Yes, I think you should get back to the DoCoMo reps that did the unlocking. Somebody mentioned earlier that after the unlocking (entering the key) you need to make a call for the procedure to be fully completed but I'm not sure if that's true.
That is 100% true. I unlock about 50-100 phones a week, and I can tell you that the sharp android smartphones have issues with the unlock. You need to basically put in a docomo simcard, connect to the docomo 3G network, make a call, and also access the internet etc at least one time. Then power down the phone and put in your non-docomo sim. That should solve your problem
Okay.. Wish I had known that before I went home Because I didn't have my foreign sim at the time, she used a docomo sim for the unlock ~ but I guess it didn't work.. Do you think if I call docomo from overseas that they could help me?
Even if you called them, they wouldn't be able to help, because the docomo shop personal and even the shop manager didn't know about this problem until I pointed it out to them. They even examined the phone again after the unlock and they said they couldn't find anything wrong as the computer and the phone would show its unlocked, even though you still had to make a call and transfer data packets to be 100% sure its not locked. It has to be a sharp issue, because it has only happened with sharp phones so far, and I have unlocked every docomo model released after april 2011.
I wouldn't keep my hopes up that softbank will start to do unlocking anytime soon. The only reason docomo started doing it, was to try and force softbank and AU to also do it, in hopes of taking softbank and AU customers, and I don't think softbank or AU want to play into docomo's hands
It seems like Japanese carriers are more of a pain in the *** than carriers over here! What about a developer managing to unlock it? Any chance of that?
Yup, I know like zero softbank distributors / suppliers, and Im not sure about tokyo area, but there are like no white rom shops that offer any good selection of the newest softbank phones. All I see are iPhones from softbank and even the softbank staff that I talk to frequently tell me that 75% of their new contracts now are all iphone / ipad related. I get this weird feeling that Softbank will eventually just become an Apple store. Cause when I walk into the Softbank stores in Kyoto, its like the first thing you see all over is iPhone iPhone iPad iPhone accessories, oh and over here we have this other stuff thats android.
