    tethering

my friend is thinking about getting a smartphone through Virgin Mobile and is interested in tethering so he can use his smartphone as his main internet with his laptop.

Is this available with Virgin Mobile without a monthly fee? Any suggestions on phones.

It's not offered or supported by VM. That said, you can root any of the Android phones and tether without any difficulty.

I have an android with verizon (htc incredible), but I have not tried rooting it. I will let him know. Then I will have to learn how to root so I can assist him. :-)

If it's going to be his main connection then I feel sorry for him. Data speeds are painfully slow and he will quickly hit his data cap.

It is not allowed but can be acheived. No need to root unless your friend wants to use the wireless hotspot feature. There are no data caps it is unlimited. the LG Optimus Slider and HTC Wildfire S can be found for @ $150, and the Motorola Triumph @ $225. For wired tethering the Wildfire S performs best of the 3.

If your friend will be using this primarily for browsing they might want to consider other service providers.

P R E P A I D is just another way to offer (and pay for) premium services and devices.

Before using VM as a primary Internet connection, your friend should be aware of the 2.5GB data cap that will be implemented in March. There is another thread devoted to that cap on the front page, so there's no need to go into a lot of detail here.

Thats a "speed limit" not a cap. Data will still be unlimited.

I wholeheartedly agree that I would not want to use a cell phone connection as my sole internet provider. And I am not even familiar with VM. I will pass all of your advice on to him.

How is VM cell service in general? Do you like it? He is interested in it being that it uses the Sprint network.

    Thanks for all your help.

The service has both good and bad days, as for the data that depends where he is going to be using it. Some have great data speeds, but most of us do not as of right now anyway, that might improve only time will tell. Though it is against the tos so it is iffy, depends how lucky he is.

Tethering is adequate for light web browsing while on the go, but VM's data speeds are just too slow for anything beyond that.

That’s a load of crap, sorry but I live in a no high-speed area, only dial up internet. [hard lines are all still from the 30s]

26.4KBPS is fine for light web browsing; 256KBPS is fast enough to do ANYTHING on the internet.

It’s all a matter of perspective

You can tether (hotspot) the LG Optimus without rooting. At least you can with the original Optimus software, I can't speak to what is currently being installed.

^Sort of... Older Optimus V phones could wirelessly tether without rooting, but you would have to download Quick Settings (for example) to use the capability. Newer Optimus V phones must be downgraded, or rooted.

The Optimus Slider, once rooted, can tether wireless, as a legit hotspot. Other Android devices (tablets, etc) can tether through it, without any form of alteration.

Every Android phone can be tethered wired through an app like PDANet, EasyTether, Klank (Klink?) or the like.

The optimus v was really very easy to root, The main reason I did it was to tether my ipad while out once and awhile, but I am a chicken so I dont use the tether lol

PdaNet New! Version 3.02 improves performance and fixes multiple connection issues. Now allows you to hide Tether usage.
