This should be fun - $800 bill

So I got an $800 bill from Fido today. Thing is, I have never done any business with them.

It says $350 of unpaid bills and $450 of ECF. Seems like someone convinced Fido that they were me, got an iphone contract (iphone value pack listed in cancelled services) and ran with it.

Ideally clearing this up would be as simple as phoning them up and telling them that they need to send this to their fraud department or whatever, but it won't be will it?

I wonder how this BS could even get through. The address they have is missing the apartment number and has the wrong (old) postal code FFS. Rep eager for a sale push things through? Or maybe somebody working there is in on it....

Nope not going to be easy. Sounds like you are in for a fight against identity theft. If they insist on getting it from you, I suggest you get a lawyer, to defend yourself and to countersue (because they obviously got it wrong).

Identity theft likely. Fido/Rogers makes it easy. Hands up anyone that has been asked for ID when HUPing at a fido/Roger store/kiosk. Sometimes they might, generally you just need to provide a phone number.

    Good luck.

Thing is it's not a HUP, I've never been with Fido it's a 'cold start' account. Don't those need credit checks? I don't see how this person had enough info to pass that.

I think they got my basic name and address because stupid me had my new landline listed in the phone book last year. How convenient that the phone book listing doesn't have my apartment number (or middle initial) and neither does Fido. It seems they pushed it through with just the information from the phone book listing?

If you get nowhere with Fido, try Ontario Consumer Protection. Also might not hurt to email consumer advocacy columnist Ellen Roseman about it.

Right. Forgot as soon as I read that part. This is going to hurt either way.

There's a fraud department that deals with this. Call care and explain, they will then send it to fraud for investigation.

Call and ask for a fraud case to be opened. Also call the credit reporting companies and ask them to flag your file so if anyone does have your info and tries to open anything else with your data it will require the company in question to contact you first before allowing it to be done.

The fraud case may not even be needed the agent may just transfer you to retentions and they may just cancel the account for you.

But still contact the credit agencies.

I don't know Fido's procedure for fraud investigation but you should call the credit agencies and go to the local police and open a file number. You should also find out where it was sold and ask for some original documentation of sale if possible. Then you have done your part and it's up to them to show they sold it to you.
I'm not telling you anything that you can't just google for yourself

I just can't imagine that the information from a phonebook would be enough to open a new account. They must have had other info/fake ID. It's been too many years so I can't remember what info/ID they needed.

DO THIS. Stat, since this comes up as a 'soft check' on the credit score as well.

Used to be; driver license, SIN, Passport, banking info [less favorable since it would normally give you a credit limit, or fee of 100$ to open acct.], credit card. Officially one was supposed to use one piece of photo ID and the other for the credit checks.

There was a flaw with this system once 'prepaid mastercards' came out which would count as a credit check, and worked... I sure hope they fixed this 3 yrs ago.
