    Nokia N8

I know that Nokia N8 has an FM transmitter.

Can I stream an online radio station through the FM transmitter to the car's stereo? Or is it just for streaming songs only from the phone?

I am thinking of listening to foreign radio stations, that is why I wanted to make sure.Otherwise there would be no need to stream radio through FM transmitter to the car radio, of course...

Not in my experience with it. The FM transmitter only seems to work for the built in Nokia Music Player. I haven't seen an option to do it with the Nokia Inter.Radio app. Might be possible to do with another internet radio app.

You could either use a 3.5mm cable to connect the phone to your car stereo aux input or use a 3rd party FM transmitter that uses a 3.5mm cable to connect to the phone to play the Inter.Radio audio over your car stereo. Not sure if the Inter.Radio app can stream audio by Bluetooth as my car stereo only supports Bluetooth audio for phone calls.

FM transmitter works just fine with Internet Radio. I do it all the time. The hard part is finding a weak FM station to tune into. This is sometimes hard to do in larger cities. Launch Internet Radio choose your station and play it. Then Open FM transmitter tune station and enjoy.

yes you can. just play the station first, then turn on the fm transmitter by going into connectivity. there's no option in the internet radio app itself though.

Same procedure for video, launch video, open FM transmitter tune your radio to that station.

Agreed it's tough to find a consistently clean FM channel.

With regards to the FM transmitter I have found one irritating behavior. Let's say I listen to a podcast on my way home from work. I turn it off and then the first time I listen to music after I have turned the transmitter off it turns on itself on so I have to turn it off once again. Does that happen to anyone else as well?

It even works with youtube videos from the browser .. The only exceptions that i've found so far are voice, and Nokia Maps.. the voice guide comes out of the loud speaker. Its amazing how they've managed to work out all the APIs to implement this feature.

yes, it goes in "stand by" mode after you turn of the music player.. it assumes that you will get back in the car, and listen to it again I guess. However, if you plug in your headphones while the FM transmitter is ON, it will switch to the headphones and switch of the FM transmitter completely.

And I can confirm what you said about bigger cities, its much harder to find a free frequency. It also depends on how good your car radio antenna is.. I live a small town, and it works very well.. it will be hard to part with it one day, which seems inevitable since no other OS has it .. at least for now. Hopefully by then stereo bluetooth receivers will be standard in most cars.

Here is a quick pick at the power usage during music playback with FM trans, headphones, and loudspeaker

    loud speaker @ 70% volume

like go0gle said, if you just turn off the podcast application only, the transmitter stays in standby mode (usually there's a notification that tells you it's on standby or the icon is on top). you would have to turn off the transmitter as well so that it doesn't turn on again the next time.
