Well it happened again. Japan Post (or the customs agency) has a red cross next to my name, and stopped my package of a phone with battery from heading to the US (despite clearly being marked as having no battery, they X-rayed it).
Luckily they were kind enough to let me remove the battery and send the phone as-is, but now the recipient is stuck with a phone that has no battery!
Did some searching. US is not on the allowed sea-mail list. UPS can ship Lithium batteries, but want USD$146 for a 100g package. Fedex was much more reasonable at 7700yen. Given the fact that i flew to NY for 40,000yen (round trip) last year, its almost cheaper to fly the damn battery there myself! (which is still allowed)
So that got me thinking: Are there any HoFo members with reliable feedback that are in Tokyo at the moment (for Tokyo Autosalon or whatever), who are leaving for the US soon? Will exchange for a Docomo phone unlock, or help buying a phone if you are stuck.
Ditto if you are here from China/HK or any other country that allows sending of batteries (cheaply!)
Did some looking online; buying a 003SH battery in China and paying for shipping by EMS from here seems to be cheaper than getting an 003SH battery in Japan. I'm guessing the packs here are refurbed or something.
But no, had you posted that a couple of days earlier I would have been glad to help. Now I'm back in Shanghai.
not sure if Hong Kong Post allows sending of batteries- I did send my nook color (with an internal/sealed battery) to the US successfully once but I had to mark the package as 'books'.

Let me know, I'll be here until Feb. 5.
i've gotten many replacement batteries from hk before on ebay
Yamanote, thanks for the offer. I have bought laptop batteries from HK, one quite recently.
Can you find out if there is a sea-mail option from HK to the US? Thats one issue i face - no sea-mail from Japan to US, so there is no way around it apart from Fedex/UPS
Let me check with the phone owner. He might just decide to go with the aftermarket chinese battery like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BATTERY-F...item4841a24d67
though i doubt that would give good battery life - its only 1200mAh compared to the stock 1390

Yes there is definitely a sea mail option from HK. I asked about it for my nook color and they said it will take several weeks.
Let me know.

I'll look into it. There's a job agency near my hotel, maybe i'll pop in when I'm bored and see what they have available.
Yamanote, if you do come to Japan, don't come and do a teaching job....its super deadend and a horrible experience 99% of the time. They treat you like cattle and sure the pay seems good at first, but then you realize your wasting your life doing nothing that will advance your career. This is what I hear from all of my Gaijin friends. But Im sure you already know all this :P
