If you aren't willing to take a contract there isn't much you can do, since the rules require you to take a data contract (which itself should then require a voice contract). Apparently some store employees will allow you to use them without taking a data contract if you are paying full price for a phone, but I don't think that is common.

Customer service informed me that buying a phone at full price with fido dollars is no problem. Then I went to Apple store and made a transaction for an iPhone without a problem. I expect a fee of 25$ on my next invoice.
Wrong, they charge you an administration fee for the Loyalty Handset Upgrade.
Believe it or not it's not related with the Fidodollars.
If you purchase a phone and we charge it straight in your account (with or without Fidodollars; with or without Fido Agreement), the $25.00 will be charge automatically.

No wonder I'm leaving them!
Fritz - you said if we purchase a phone with or without agreement, with or without fido dollars they charge an additional 25 if we buy it through our account (basically through credit/credit card)??? Even if we buy it at full price with cash? So... Each phone costs $25 more than advertised? What if I walk into a store and buy a phone through my account without HUPing- at full price. Are you saying I pay full price, tax, and then $25???? That doesn't make sense. Are you sure you mean that or do you mean something else?
I'm not telling you anything that you can't just google for yourself
well if you do not know what to do just transfer the line to my account so the fido doallrs will go to my account and then transfer your line back that way you have nothing to worry about.
Im just joking doing that you will need a credit check internally and it does not make sense I just said it for fun

yes, what you will pay is always higher than advertised price.
Rogers is actually fighting a court case with two arguments:
1) making claims that have no proof or demonstratable merit should not be considered false or misleading advertising.
2) If found guilty of false advertising, the penalties should be painless
Point 2 seems to be something they want for practices like this.
* In order to provide a fair balance between hardware costs and customers' advantages, Fido introduced a $25 Hardware Upgrade Administrative Fee for all upgrades.
Policy Details
$25 HUP Fee :
* This administrative fee is to help cover:
* Processing the order
* Administration of the program
* Managing On hand inventory (warehouse)
* Restocking and tracking inventory fulfillment
* Shipping and handling
Rules & Exceptions :
* Applicable to all hardware upgrades for postpaid customers, across all channels (Call Centre, in store, etc.).
* Customers will be exempt in the following circumstances:
* Migration to Basic plan with HUP.
* Prepaid customer migrating to postpaid with HUP.
Objection Handling
Customer's Concern Response
Why do you charge a $25 Administrative fee?
* When offering a phone with an agreement discount, we reduce the price of the device versus from the manufacturer's cost through the agreement discount. Fido costs and value of the device are represented by price of phones without agreement (up to $ 600 for iPhones).
* There are also significant costs in terms of processing, administration, inventory management fulfillment, stocking, shipping and handling every time a phone is ordered.
Is this the return of hidden fees? * No, this is a one time charge per order that will not impact your subsequent invoices. This fee is also communicated on Fido.ca and in our advertisement.
Aren't you the company that cares? * Yes, we care about our customers. However we must be able to cover the costs related to ordering equipment.
* Fido introduced this to help fulfil customers' needs be able to keep offering a wide range of hardware.
Other providers don't charge administrative fees for upgrade. * We can't comment on other companies' business policies, as these change often and we don't want to give you wrong or outdated information.
Bill 60 is supposed to protect me as customer. Is this compliant with Bill 60? * Bill 60 is a regulation towards penalty fees. This is an administrative fee.
Why do I have to pay that fee since Fido will be able to repay the phone in a very short time with the MSFs you charge me? * Don't forget that monthly service fees are not only covering the agreement discount, but also all services offered to you (Monthly plan, per second billing, more FidoDollars every month, reception on the expanded network, etc.).
I am buying my phone full price; why is there an admin fee applicable? * The hardware upgrade fee is to help cover the costs of processing the order, managing inventory and shipping and handling.
* These costs occur whether you are ordering a device with or without renewal & agreement discount.
I don't want a Smartphone: Why should I pay more because a lot of people want the latest and most expensive devices? * I understand these new devices do not meet your current needs, however a growing number of our customers are asking for Smartphones and we wish to remain true to our customer's feedback.
Yes - but that is a HUP fee. What Fritz seemed to be implying is that you pay the HUP fee even when you buy a phone full price - ie not a HUP. He seemed to say regardless of fido dollars or contract upgrade you pay $25 no matter what. Maybe I misunderstood.

Let me get this straight if I renew my contract and buy a phone from Fido I'll be charged $25 for the privilege to renew into another 3 year contract whether I use Fido $ or cash?
Am I the only one who thinks this policy is absurd?
