If i buy a BB 9860 from Rogers, without a contract (so i pay the full price), would rogers unlock the phone? or would I be forced to use rogers network anyways? because i want to buy the phone and use it with other carriers. Also if i unlock it and use it with other carriers, will rogers still honour the warranty? Thanks

Btw I thought you asked about unlocking...but anyways have you the link. And yes as CGY said, unlocking only voids the warranty (and not always) if you use a software method by patching the OS. If you use a code based on IMEI number, then it's all fine.
i called roger and they said if i unlock it and use it with another carrier, then they have nothing to do with it anymore
Depends on the manufacturer. Some manufacturers will allow their customers to communicate directly with them and you will be able to have your phone serviced by contacting the manufacturer directly. Examples include Samsung, Nokia, and Apple. Others will not do this and will only let the carrier handle the warranty on behalf of he manufacturer. Examples include HTC and RIM.

Apple clearly has the best warranty...................

The reason Rogers told u that is because they don't want u to use their locked phone with other carriers. It is a policy that clearly protects them from people switching between carriers so easily. It is to discourage u from being free.
Ii is a tactic of fear that most companies use against their customers to protect their own asses. Kind of patethic if u ask me, but the government lets them get away with it. I wud like to think as a consumer or an employee I have rights that protect me, but if u actually really dig deep.............we dont have jack ****. This is where the government gets their money and our hard earned money.
Anyways just my few cents, because thats all I got for now.

Try not to buy it from Rogers...............look for an independant seller. That may be ur best option. Blackberry is the worst when it comes to buying it through Rogers., atleast according to my experience.
Unlocking a device has nothing to do with warranty, and will not void it.
Minor correction to the above statement...
It depends on how the device is unlocked. Unlocking it via the subsidy unlock code won't void the warranty. Unlocking it via software or hardware modifications may void the warranty.
Fido (monthly plan - personal/data):Novatel Wireless MC950D / Nokia CS-18
Rogers (pay as you go - Canadian prepaid): "Fido" (unlocked) Samsung Nexus-S
Rogers (monthly BIS data plan): unlocked Blackberry Bold 9700
Red Pocket Mobile (US prepaid): unlocked Sony-Ericsson w300i

It's not a scare tactic. Many manufacturers do not allow customers to contact them directly for service. If you buy a Rogers branded phone from one of those manufacturers and then you unlock your device for use on another carrier and don't have a Rogers cell phone number, Rogers wil not be able to send the phone to the manufacturer for service on your behalf. With no other way to officially obtain service, the warranty is essentially void. Perhaps the rep could have chosen better words, but they are ultimately educating the customer so that there are no surprises if issues should arise with the device.
