Lost iPhone 4S - AT&T wants full retail to replace it.
Well for some reason I wasnt told about the insurance. I wonder why they wouldn't add insurance by default. Phones are easy to lose and no one would opt out of the insurance.
No my problem is the price of a new phone. Adding a second line is not cost effective either. Does anyone on here know of a way I can get back on an Iphone without going bankrupt?
When a phone is purchased, there is usually a checkbox required on the sales receipt if a customer declines insurance. Do you have that receipt still?
Sorry to hear that your phone was lost. They cannot add insurance by default when there is a monthly premium charge added to the bill, and a deductible when a claim is made.
How long did you have the iPhone 4S? If you had insurance, it would have shown on your monthly statement. I do wish you luck in finding an economical way to get a replacement.
If I'm annoyed and you're annoyed, does that make us a paranoid ??

People do choose not to get insurance. You can add a line to get a new phone, use the new phone on your line with the lost phone and pay $9.99 per month for the new line. You would add a basic phone to the new line and add no features after you start using the iPhone on your old line. Paying $240 over two years is a lot less than paying the full price of a new iPhone up front.
If I had to wager a guess I'd say the majority of users don't buy the insurance, so adding it by default would displease more customers than please. Also, they can't just add something by default that incurs an additional charge. You'd have to agree to that.
If you lost your phone, have you tried locating it via the Find My Phone app?
The most economical way to replace your phone is either buy one used on eBay or craigslist, or do what efparri suggested and open a new line on a FSP for $10/month. That's $240 over the life of the contract, vs. the $450 subsidy you receive in return, so you're still ahead by $210.
I am a little confused. My Verizon phone was able to roam on GSM because they used TDMA. Tell it was shutdown. The phone recognizes it as Analog. If PCS has TDMA, It could be technically be used on GSM.

AT&T wants to charge you full price because you just got a large discount on the first iPhone 4S you bought and they need you to be a customer for a certain amount of time to be able to pay them back the money they saved you up front. Also I heard that the insurance AT&T offers doesn't cover iPhones only the cheezy phones they sell.
That is where a lot of people get confused, i had insurance on my blackberry but when i upgraded i had to re-add the insurance. And some people say that well i pay 5 or 10 bucks on insurance a month but never lose my phone. And if i do then i still have to pay around $150 for a new one, but if you think about it 240 plus a deductible, its still cheaper than paying full retail on a new iPhone. So now you are in a pickle, buy full price or add that second line. Plus now adding the insurance, and finding some sort of dumb phone to put that spare line on.
I don't know how At&t reps are but if they are like verizon, they cant read minds, and if you wanted the insurance or had it before, I myself would have double checked to make sure it was added before i signed anything. When i make any changes to my devices the main question i ask is about insurance. I used to work for nextel and saw too many sob stories about it, not having it or declining it then saying they asked for it.

I don't know about them not covering the iPhone but if you pay for the insurance it is covered. With VZW i pay my fee but is covered by Asurian. If i pay for it, its covered. For att to offer the insurance but say we don't cover an iphone under our insurance plan could end up in some major law suits. Its kind of like saying Geico will cover a dodge but not a chevy, and still charge you for it... in the end its wrong

AppleCare (including +) does not cover loss/theft.
OP: Do you have homeowners or renter's insurance? Many of those policies cover replacement of devices that are lost or stolen. You might also want to check the debit or credit card you used to see if they offer some sort of loss protection.

If adding a new line with 2 year contract costs only $10/month, which means $240 for life on contract...where does AT&T make money from?
If all you pay is $240 over 2 years (assuming you are fine with using very little voice) how can iPhone 4s cost so little?
The carrier does not have to make money on each line. It makes its money on the total amount paid for the FamilyShare voice plan. The carrier (AT&T Mobility) collects at least five times $10 on the primary line for the lowest priced plan. It collects at least ten times $10 for the highest priced non-unlimited voice plan. That is from $1200 to $2400 for a single line. Then you get from $240 to $960 for the secondary lines. This is for voice only.
It's hard to claim the insurance benefits when you didn't enroll in it. I understand your frustrations though, it is a pain when you look back and realize only a small amount of money would have saved you a lot now.
Try calling and asking to reps and explain the situation to them. Explain that your short on money and you really liked your iphone and that you lost it mistakenly. I'm sure they can do something in terms of price they sell it to you, perhaps save you a few hundred. This happened to my girlfriend before and she explained to Rogers, and they gave her a new phone at a very reasonable price. Except I think it's a little bit easier to get these things when you're a woman, imo.
When I was still an At&t CS representative until 2009, there was absolutely no discounts on any iPhone under any circumstance and no early upgrades for an iPhone without a regional VP approval. Chances of that were slim to none.
If you add a line, wouldn't you have to switch to a family plan? The cheapest I see is 59.99, then you would add 9.99. If someone is already paying 39.99 for a single line how could you get away with paying just 9.99 without having to switch to a family plan?
