    confused about accessing email

As a new Avail owner, I was told I would need to set up a Google G mail account in order to access email.
I will occasionally need to access email when away from the house, where At&t is my internet provider.
I collect email off the Yahoo/At&t website, so am having a bit of trouble understanding why I need a Gmail account if I'm browsing to Yahoo's site.
Obviously, I've never got email before on my old Nokia, so keep the language somewhat non technical or you're sure to lose me.

You don't have to have a Gmail account to get email on your phone. You will however need a Google Account to access and download apps from the Android Marketplace, so you may end up with a Gmail account by default just from signing up for a Google Account.

You can access your email through the native email application of your phone, a web browser on the phone, or a third party app (Yahoo Mail for Android), etc... There is no shortage of ways to get your email on your phone and none of them require you use Gmail.
