Having trouble getting new Droid 2 Global set up on Page Plus - no text messaging
I just activated my new Droid 2 Global and ported my number to it and I'm having trouble getting text messaging working. Also *22890 fails. Some background info about what I have done so far:
Got a brand new Droid 2 Global and started by doing an SBF update to Gingerbread (2.3.3) System Version 4.5.608.A956. Then I rooted, installed droidwall, and have not whitelisted anything over 3G yet.
I called Page Plus and got activated and my number ported from Verizon. The *22890 would not work, so I called Page Plus support and they walked me through manually setting up what the *22890 would have accomplished. We had some problems and it wasn't working when I hung up, but shortly after, voice calls started working, although the signal bars show a lot of fluctuation and often show no bars. It almost seems like I might be in a bad service area, but service has always been great in my home. I've never had a problem with my previous phone on Verizon.
I added a 12 plan PIN to the number. Voice calls work, but I'm not getting incoming texts. When I try to send a text, it pops up a notification that says text message not sent. I've poked around the settings and I can't find anything that would seem to affect it, but this phone is totally new to me and I don't know my way around it. Actually, I don't know my way around texting at all - I didn't have it on my old Verizon plan. (I know, welcome to 2002.) I did some searching and found some forum threads that suggested doing *22890, but that still isn't working. It just says "we are unable to program your phone", so I am thinking maybe my phone is not completely programmed properly.
Any suggestions towards getting *22890 working or getting text messaging working? Thanks.
So you modified your smartphone before porting your number to it? Probably should have had the number ported first and test to see if everything worked before modifying. The phone just might be defective in texting...

Yes, I wanted to get it all set up before porting my number to it. I thought it would be more likely to have problems in that area and I didn't want my number to be out of service if I hit a snag. I thought about activating with a new number and porting later, but that seemed more difficult and definitely more expensive because I would have to pay for activation.
I guess the phone could be defective in texting, but is that very common? Seems more likely to be configured wrong.
I had the same issue when activating my brand new D2G. P+ CS had to have me manually enter data. But, I was able to make a test call while still connected to CS. Fortunately, everything works properly. I would call CS back and make sure data and SMS is enabled on your account. Sometimes, those "switches" get reset. I don't believe SMS has any user customizable features - in other words, I don;t think users can "turn on" or "turn off" SMS from the phone setup.
BTW, IMO, I think doing the mods (rooting, ect) BEFORE activating is the way to go. I wanted to be sure everything was working OK over Wi-Fi before I bounced my old phone off the system <shrug>

Thanks for the info. Does *22890 work for you now? Is it even supposed to work on the Droids? If not how do you get the PRL updated? I see a thread on the latest PRL, but I couldn't find an explanation on how to actually update.
Regarding my texting not working - I did set up an account on pagepluscellular.com and added the phone and the phone features page shows the SMS box checked. As far as data being enabled goes, I don't think that that should affect the ability to send and recieve texts. My call records show some data usage, so I assume it is enabled on the Page Plus end. I've disabled it on my phone for now while I am figuring things out. I know that will prevent MMS messages, but it shouldn't prevent regular text messages.
I think this may be a separate issue, but I'll mention it here just in case it is related: I set up voice mail and left myself a message, but the voice mail indicator does not show on the phone.
I did Gingerbread update, then activated on pageplus.. No problems..
What i did is after updating to Gingerbread, I did a hard reset - formatted whatever memory to clean up remnants of previous operating system... Sort of a standard thing if you play with roms...

Yes I did the factory reset after loading the ROM. You say no problems, but does *22890 work for you? I still haven't figured out if it is even supposed to work. Searching through the Wiki, I see a section on manually programming a droid, which is what both jay_rm and I had to do to get started, but I would have thought that I would have seen it mentioned in a lot more places if it isn't supposed to work.
Sometimes when *22890 does not work, doing just *228 and selecting option 1, will. If it works, and you want to just update the PRL, in the future, do the *228 and select option 2.
I have a used Droid 2 Global that is working on the Page Plus. When I got the phone I did a factory reset on it, I ported the number to the device, did the activate the device as part of the initial factory setup (no need to *22890 as the activation took care of everything. I turned off 3G via the battery & data manger until I put it on the monthly plan. Texts were working, but of course picture texts did not until I turned 3G data back on. I rooted the device and installed Droidwall.
I have not done any rom flashing- Android 2.3.3 System version 4.5.608.A956.Verizon.en.US after doing the updates downloads and apps showing updates available.

It maybe phone to phone difference, but *22890 worked fine for me...

If all else fails, put the phone back to the factory default ROM and try again. I've read on HoFo that sometimes a modification to the phone, or possibly even rooting is the cause of some feature(s) not working. Also, have you double checked to make sure SMS is turned on in your PPC account? These are long shots, if you can't find a solution otherwise.

I can do a *228 at any time for updates.
Both of my sons are using D2G's on Page Plus, and when activating neither one would update with *22890, but both worked fine when I dialed *228 and chose option 1. I rooted one of them, but waited until after it was active and everything was working before I rooted it.

Thanks. I checked that SMS is checked in my manage phone features web page. I also tried unchecking the box and clicking save, but I got an error " Sorry, we encountered an error. Please try again. If you continue to have problems please contact customer service. Thank you." When I went back to the features page, the box was unchecked. So I marked the box and hit save again and got the same error message. Then I went back and the box was checked again. Then I tried sending and receiving a text and it still doesn't work. To help me diagnose, can someone tell me if someone sends you a text and it doesn't get to your phone (say your phone is turned off), does anything show up in your call records on the PP web site? That might help me diagnose whether the problem is with my phone or with the setup on the PP end. I don't see anything in my call records.
One other thing that i though of that might be relevant is that when I was on verizon, I had text messaging disabled/deactivated or whatever they call it. Because my plan didn't include text messaging, I didn't want to be charged for any received texts. So maybe teh setting carried over. I was thinking about checking about that with Page Plus support, but I realize that my phone is not supported, so I want to do as much diagnosis as I can before calling them.
Going back to the original ROM is probably my next step. Now that I know *22890 or *228 option 1 should be working, I'm wondering if perhaps the phone is not fully or correctly programmed and that is affecting the text messaging. Before I do that, I want to make sure I know how to manually program it myself. Unfortunately, I didn't take notes when Page Plus support walked me through the programming. I found this link: http://wiki.howardforums.com/index.p...ual_Activation
Is the section on droid still accurate? It looks like all I need to manually program is the MIN and MDN numbers. Is there anything else I will need to set?
I would do what some are calling an "esn reset". Have PP CS or a dealer do an ESN change on the account (switch to a different phone). You can do this by having them do an ESN change to a dummy ESN. A dummy ESN is the last 7 digits of your current phone number preceded by the number 2500. So the dummy ESN would look like 2500xxxxxxx, the x's being the last 7 digits of your current phone number. Then have them do an ESN change back to the actual ESN. This action seems to reset "things" on the account. It is also called "re-aunthenticating" you ESN. It can fix a lot of weird issues.
I recently tested the "don't mention a PP Dealer by name" rule here on PP Hofo......trust me, it is still in effect - got me a 7 day ban.
