You can activate online, wherein you will be assigned a new phone number temporarily, then call Tmo customer support number to start the port of your AT&T number from AT&T
OR:
What I recommend is porting your AT&T number to google voice, and then having that number forward to your new Tmo number. That way, you never have to worry about porting the number to a new carrier, you just switch carriers and forward the GV number to whatever number the new carrier gives you, every time.
I was looking at the Monthly 4G plan and it does say New Activations only. So that means you can't port a number into Monthly 4G? T-Mobile or otherwise?
It would be from a T-Mobile postpaid line. There are many examples where ports between MVNO's and/or prepaid divisions and their parent companies are difficult, if not made impossible by company restrictions. I'm just making sure this sort of transition is possible? If not, I might have to transfer her line to an AT&T prepaid line or something to get it moved back over...
Oh well that requires rep interaction and they officially say they don't have access to the wal-mart plan. the rest you will have no problem with converting your line from post to prepaid.

That's reassuring. The wife decided against this phone after longing for it so long. She's moved her focus onto something else anyway so I guess I won't find out for sure at least right now.

Will Google Voice forward text message to Tmo phone number?
Will Google Voice forward text message to Tmo phone number?
Yes, If you port to Google Voice, all incoming texts are sent to whatever number you want.
But, outgoing texts are "possibly" an issue if you want to retain your outgoing CID. Understand, that all INCOMING Phone calls and text messages are issued a Google Voice virtual phone number. If you reply to that virtual phone number, you retain your outgoing CID.
Example: Bill's phone number in your phone book is 1-555-123-4567. Google takes his call and sends it to you with something like 1-786-351-4974. That's Googles replacement phone number. If you save that in to your contact list, all outgoing calls will display your Google Voice outgoing CID.
Also you can:
(1) Text or call from the Google Voice web Page.
(2) Just let people know the new number on your phone and forget about it, and give out only your GV number.
(3) Get an app that handles it seamlessly. I'm using Govoice on Wp7. Some Android phones are pretty much set to go. And Sprint has partnered with Google Voice, so it is handled seamlessly. (Don't really know about anything other than the Windows phone app, period.)

I just bought a TMO SIM for $1.99 and the activation code was invalid. I told the CSR that I wanted the Walmart plan, but that I knew I had to do it on-line, and she had no problem putting me on it. I am a relatively new customer (was with AT&T for the PAYG data and went back to TMO.)
