Need app for free Voicemail and Caller ID

I'm in canada now and they charge here for voicemail and caller ID.

I won't pay for them. Are there any apps that would give me free voicemail or caller ID?

Google voice voicemail feature doesn't work in canada btw.

An app won't really help you for VM since VM generally works by conditionally forwarding your missed/busy/unreachable calls to a VM number. GV voicemail works fine from Canada (I use it) but because you will be forwarding to a US number from a Canadian line you will pay for US long distance and possible for forwarding minutes too (yes, some of our carriers charge extra for forwarding, $3/month for 2500 forwarded minutes or $0.25-$0.35/forwarded minute PPU).

I would suggest you get a local number from freephoneline.ca. Once you have a free number, they offer free VM and you can set it up to email you the VM messages. You just have to forward your Canadian line to it for any conditional calls using the GSM dial codes. You will still have to find out if your carrier charges for conditional call forwarding minutes, but at least you won't pay LD to use it.
    Carrier unlocked iPhone 4
Unlimited airtime, Unlimited CAN/US long distance, Unlimited SMS to CAN/US wireless numbers
2500 Call Forwarding minutes to CAN/US numbers
    CiD, 6GB
Google Voice for visual voice mail with message transcription, conditional greetings, unlimited messages (vs 35 message cap), remote retrieval from any PC or phone, no auto-purge after 10 days and most importantly no $7-$8 charge.

when I tried to sign up for a google voicemail, it said I can't from this country.

you suggest I get a free number from what area code? (my cell is a 778)

then I could forward my missed calls to that new number after a certain amount of rings?

Check out Youmail. I don't know how your carrier will handle it, but it's a free service here in the States.

Not being able to set up GV from Canada is a restriction, but you can get around it by installing hotpostshield (a VPN) on your PC. That will let you set it up, (will also need a US number to forward to to complete the setup). Regardless, it is not really cost effective if you have to pay LD to forward all you VM messages to it.

Yes, if you use freephoneline.ca, get an phone number that is local to you (778 or 604 for the most past) and set up the VM there. Then use the GSM codes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_forwarding) to point your conditional calls to that number.

Youmail works in Canada. They have local numbers for certain cities as well.

How does Youmail work? I have to have my provider Telus forward my calls to my Youmail # if it rings enough times? I think they even charge for call forwarding here.
