Thank you FIDO for the past 12 years. Time to say goodbye !!!
I have been with Fido for the last 12 years. They truly WERE an innovative and client friendly company. But the past few years have been a big dissapointment. I had a great plan with them. $50 NA unlimited calling and texting along with $30 for 6gb of data. Most of the time my data was on edge. Calls were being dropped. I got a PM line and the data speeds were at times quicker than Fido. Go figure !!! At my peak I was spending $700-$1000 per month on Fido. The bad feelings began when the US data was removed from the $50 unlimited plan. That was a slap in the face. Then when Rogers rolled out Extreme Text Messaging I called Fido and they had no idea what that was and whether they would offer it so I transferred half my lines over to Rogers. The next day Fido offered Extreme Text Messaging. Come on FIDO !!!! How can CSRs not know about a product that was being launched the next morning. I am also tired of having to buy all my phones (especially BBs) from Rogers at full price and then having to pay to unlock them. Then one day I needed to repair one of my blackberries and warranty was void due to unlocking. Even Koodo and VM get better phones than Fido. FIDO, you're not the DOG you use to be. So i ported my last line to Rogers last week. Yes i know that Rogers owns Fido and they are the ones that changed everything around for the big DOG but at least now I don't have to wait for new phones and new services such as RON and Extreme Text Messaging. My plan is not as good as the one with Fido and i am paying $20 more per month but I have been very happy with the service so far. Maybe this was Rogers plan from day one. To strip Fido of its glory and force people like myself to move over to Rogers. Whatever the plan, I am officially a Rogers customer and a happy one at that. Thank you Fido for a good time and here's hoping that the honeymoon continues with Rogers.

Unlocking via subsidy unlock code (which is the usual method done for Blackberries) doesn't void the warranty. How can it void the warranty when the carriers will even do this for you if you pay them $$$ (~$50) and if you satisfy certain criteria?
Unlocking via hardware hacks or firmware modifications can void the warranty.
I've had warranty work done on my unlocked phones. The only issue that has ever happened to me was instead of fixing my phone, they simply replaced it and I had to pay to unlock it again (since the subsidy unlock code is unique to the phone itself and not the phone model).
Fido (monthly plan - personal/data):Novatel Wireless MC950D / Nokia CS-18
Rogers (pay as you go - Canadian prepaid): "Fido" (unlocked) Samsung Nexus-S
Rogers (monthly BIS data plan): unlocked Blackberry Bold 9700
Red Pocket Mobile (US prepaid): unlocked Sony-Ericsson w300i
Good luck at Rogers. What I really want to know is how you were spending 700-1000 at fido per month. Not doubting it - just wondering how this happens. More curiosity than anything - ie nosey
I'm not telling you anything that you can't just google for yourself

A friend of mine goes to the US regularly for business and spends about $1,000 a month because of roaming.
Basically, having enough money to not care how much it's costing per minute, as long as your usual phone works.
That is my guess anyway, seeing as OP mentioned he didn't like that they took US roaming out of the unlimited-GPRS plan.
My bills were 700-1000 because I had six lines at one point in time. Between voice and data and the occasional travel packs. Never paid roaming as i have a US cell. I am in business and clients send me texts to my canadian number so i usually add US text packages. i also have an office in the US but there i use google voice for my US clients. As for voiding the warranty I purchased a bb from Rogers to use on fido since fido never gets the top models. Paid $20 online to unlock it. When I went back to Rogers for warranty repair they refused at the store because the cell was unlocked by third party and not Rogers and thus voided my warranty. The first thing they did was verify that it was unlocked.
You should have moved to Bell/Virgin/Telus/Koodo. Moving to Rogers is exactly what Big Red WANTS you to do. Same network as Fido but pay more per month. Lol have fun.
I considered Telus but what made me switch to Rogers was the Extreme Text Messaging and the Rogers One Number. These are excellent features with great potential. Thanks

Given ETM is on Fido as well, RON is worth $20/month ($240/year)?
Carrier unlocked iPhone 4
Unlimited airtime, Unlimited CAN/US long distance, Unlimited SMS to CAN/US wireless numbers
2500 Call Forwarding minutes to CAN/US numbers
CiD, 6GB
Google Voice for visual voice mail with message transcription, conditional greetings, unlimited messages (vs 35 message cap), remote retrieval from any PC or phone, no auto-purge after 10 days and most importantly no $7-$8 charge.

Shouldn't have made a difference and I would have gone to a different store. You were probably dealing with someone ignorant on unlocking. Carriers use the exact same code to unlock the phone so regardless of whether you had gone to a 3rd party to unlock it or go to Rogers itself, it shouldn't affect the warranty when using a subsidy unlock code. The only difference between going to a carrier and going to a 3rd party unlocker when using subsidy unlock codes is paying about 10 times the price to unlock the phone at the carrier.
The only thing that comes to mind with your story that I've experienced is that I once tried to get warranty from Rogers for an unlocked phone that I was using with Fido and they wouldn't provide me with warranty work because I was not a Rogers customer (but a Fido customer). I managed to resolve this by giving my bill for the phone purchase to a friend who was with Rogers. That's the only time I had problem getting warranty work on a phone (when I was not a customer of the carrier).
The OP could try RIM directly for warranty, they would be able to give a definitive answer. Last I tried, years ago, they had very good support service.
Not sure why unlocking would get warranty claim refused, but anything is possible. But the only thing is if they refuse you, they should quote where it states that in RIM"s Warranty Terms, not just "trust me, I know".
On my post paid account, it was Adiós Dog-Fone three years ago when the greedy old b**tard at 1 Mt. Pleasant/333 Bloor St. E. suddenly and without notice, started whacking me 30 cents a minute "IRM" on my unlimited inbound calls .... switched to (remained in the Big Red Empire) Chatr, it's roaming rate for Canada and USA is 25 cents per minute with Canada/USA LD included for 25 ˘/min ... I retained a Fido prepaid account ... now with the Dog-fones recent greed on data passes (see my post "FIDO Data Day and Week Passes - Billing Screwup for Prepaid?) .... it is now after 15 years for me time to leave the Dog-fone at the pound.
Another loyal customer leaving... I have been with fido for 13 years. Although I don't spend that much like dradis, I have 2 lines that used to cost me only $70 with credits. Without the credits, I'm paying nearly $100.
I was not able to retain those credits even I'm willing to sign another long term deal with fido.
Seriously, their service is going downhill, data is slow, line always got cutoff, and most importantly, I can't get in touch with the CSR..
I'm going to a future friendly network tomorrow... See you Fido
