i'm getting on of fido's us text messaging bundles and the fine print reads that all incoming texts are free except, amongst others, "3rd party alerts"..
i'm used to receiving facebook status updates via text messages if i'm not connected and i'm wondering if those would fall under 3rd party alerts ?..
I'm Cédrik, Social Media Representative for Fido. Sorry for the delay in answering you.
Facebook and Twitter text message alerts are not considered premium text messages at the moment, and will be free to receive at all times, no matter what monthly plan or prepaid service you are subscribed to.
Premium text messages or third-party services are services by third-party companies offering, as facehugger mentioned, premium content such as (but not limited to) jokes of the day, ringtone, games, chat/dating services, horoscope, etc. They're sent from special short-code numbers, normally between 4 and 7 digits.
If you subscribe to one of these services (they cannot be subscribed to automatically, you must confirm your intent), you will be billed directly on your Fido invoice (on a prepaid service, fees are deducted directly from your prepaid balance).
You can reply to these incoming messages with only the word STOP to cancel your subscription with them. You may also reply INFO to get that company's contact information (generally an e-mail address, a website or a phone number).
I hope this clarifies a bit.
If you need anything else, you know where to find me!
