The only costs you will incur for iMessage are data charges. iMessage does not come out of text messages sent. It only uses data to send the messages, therefore, it does not come out of your texts, and its your data.
Situation: Both friend and I have OS 5. Texting no charge for four months. Yesterday she sends photo and suddenly messages to her are green without delivered/read receipts, and I verified my account online that I'm being charged both incoming and outgoing - I have no texting plan. SMS is off. Another friend, same set up and messages still blue.
What has happened and how can I fix this? As an Apple feature, I'm not going to be able to get the carrier to help (obviously they are happy with this "bug"), and no AppleCare and no Apple Store within 3 hours of me. Help! I'm using Text Free as a bridge, but it sucks compared to iMessages.
The problem may be on your friend's end. If she is (or was) in an area where she has no data coverage she is sending and receiving as normal sms. Both of you try rebooting your phones and see if that helps.

Both the sender and the recipient must have data connections. If the sender has no data connection, iMessage will not be attempted. The message will be sent as MMS for picture messages, which may cost more on a pay-per-use basis than SMS.

I figured that she initiated this chain of events, but it is weird. I already tried rebooting my phone to no effect yesterday, I'll ask her to do the same.
