I just switched from my Samsung Vibrant to the Galaxy Nexus. T-Mobile 3G has been really great on my Vibrant, so I was expecting at least equal performance on my Galaxy Nexus, but things are pretty bad.
Using Speedtest I typically see 70-80ms Pings, 2 to 3Mbps Down, and 1 to 1.5Mbps Up. This is fairly consistent.
My Galaxy Nexus, so far I'm seeing 1600 to 1800ms Pings, 3 to 4Mbps Down, and 0.5 to 1Mbps Up. However sometimes my Down and Upload speeds are as low at 0.02Mbps.
Sometimes I'll get a "decent" Ping of around 150-200ms range, but still much higher than my Vibrant.
I'm doing the test from the same location to the same servers, even swapping my SIM back and forth to do the tests about the same time. Vibrant continues to do well, but the Galaxy Nexus continues to do poorly.
One thing of note, HSPA+ here doesn't appear to be good. I have CM7 on my Vibrant and I see my 3G and H indicators going back and forth constantly (being a 3G phone it didn't matter). And likewise I'll see my 3G and H indicators on my Galaxy Nexus also fluctuate back and forth during my tests.
So I'm wondering if my 3G and HSPA+ going back and forth a lot could be causing my really high latency and occasional very slow speeds. Can I disable HSPA+ if it's causing the problem (I'm guessing no, but figured I'd ask anyway)?
3G/H going back and forth means nothing. That's just the nature of the network. I get 3G/4G back and forth on my Galaxy S 2 running a custom rom and it still pulls down 10Mbps+. It has something to do with coming out of idle state.
I have a Galaxy Nexus and I notice the same. Connectivity especially when in a moving car is horrendous. Pings, terrible. Many times I get connection time outs. Updating the modem helped but it's still bad sometimes. I think we need to wait for it to drop on WIND Mobile or Mobilicity before we can get a modem tailored for AWS HSPA.
I can get 130ms pings then have 1300ms pings and it not wanting to complete a speedtest next to my Galaxy S 4G and Galaxy S 2 which kill the Galaxy Nexus in the connectivity department.

After researching the really high latency, it sounds like the phone idles in 3G mode and the first time the data is it has to switch from 3G to HSPA+ and this is what is causing the almost 2 second delay.
I tested this, by running Speedtest and the immediately restarting the test. The first test seems to almost always have 1600-ish ms pings. The second test often has much lower 150-ish ms pings. If I pause just a few seconds between tests, the pings of the next test are really high again, so it goes back to idle fairly quickly. Guess this is to save battery life.
Regarding my 3G and H indicators going back and for. As to the person asking what I expected, well I guess I did expect it to stay on H while running a test. Which is why I posed the question since it was behaving contrary to my expectation. But from the responses I think I've been educated that the back and forth is normal, even during data usage.
I'm still concerned about the slow speeds. the 0.01Mbps issue seems to have cleared up since that evening. I still see speeds of 1-2Mbps down and 0.5Mbps up far more often than I see 4-5Mbps down and and 2Mbps up. Speeds seem more 3G than HSPA+. For now I believe it's T-Mobile though. Hoping to borrow a friend AT&T SIM card to test it out on their network.
Quick semi related question. The Galaxy Nexus will "out of the box" work with t-mobile right?
Yeah, I just took my T-Mobile SIM out of my Vibrant and put it in the GSM Galaxy Nexus and it worked out of the box. Though that reminds me, I wonder if my SIM from my 3G phone could be impairing my HSPA+ speeds on the Galaxy Nexus. Can't imagine why, but maybe I should visit them and ask.

Cool, that's the one thing I was worried about in reference to getting this phone unlocked. I found out yesterday that the MyTouch is not likely to get ICS and its "geek recommended" to get official Google devices.
I've got an HSPA sim I think, that is a good observation...
