docomo with series Disney Mobile on docomo F-08D or P-05D?
Hi, I have been looking around for a Docomo unlocked android phone for quite a while now. I'm getting a little tired of using a hypersim (and the fact that it just died on me yesterday ) and want to join the unlocked Docomo androids crowd. I was looking around and the F-12C was one of my options until, I saw the announcement today that Docomo will be bringing out the Disney collab (F-08D and P-05D) androids. After watching a video, this turned into my first choice. I was hoping someone can enlighten me with some questions I have before finalizing my decision :
1) Will the phones (both models) be unlocked? (i.e. I don't need a hypersim and I can just insert my sim card)
2) Can the features of the phone be fully accessible? (i.e they note that customers will have full access to download orginal Disney "movie services, original live wallpapers, puzzle and music game application", etc.- do I need to be in Japan in order to do that?)
3) Is there a major difference between the F-08D's 720 x 1,280 pixel resolution & HD; TFT LCD; 16,770,000 colors and P-05D's 540 x 960 pixel resolution & Organic EL QHD; 16,770,000 colors? (I asked this because I won't be using the phone for watching videos a lot, so was wondering if it will make a difference if I do end up streaming/watch videos occassionally)
4) The F-08D has an inner camera, is it possible to use it for taking shots or only for video calling? Does video calling even work? (I assume no for the latter...)
5) It's my first time trying out an android- will the F-08D be faster with a OMAP4430; 1.2 GHz Dual Core CPU than P-05Ds OMAP4430; 1.0 GHz Dual Core? (i.e. a lot of lagging between the two?)
6) How long does the battery last for those that use a Docomo android phone? I use my phone for mostly texting, calling, and taking pictures ocassionally. Although with android, I will probably use wi-fi or data to access fb/email/reading documents, etc.
7) Any guesses on pricing? so I can start saving up
8) Anyone or anywhere you can recommend to obtaining this phone? I find Ebay prices quite hefty/a rip off at times.
9) Will the machi-chara (e.g. the ram butler) be on it anymore?
Additonal Details:
> Network provider: FIDO- running on 2G/GSM card (no data plan or 3G simcard)
> Budget: $500-$600 (probably the only biggest purchase for this year if I end up with this phone)

sorry for the many questions and yes, I know it's a phone targeted to children but I like the design. It stands out... I prefer this over the other girly phones- Arrows Kiss F-03D F-03D Girl's. thank you for your help!

They are DoCoMo phones released after April 1, 2011. Therefore they CAN be unlocked at DoCoMo shops and hypersims will not be required. Furthermore, they are Android phones, meaning all features (except japanese-specific stuff that requires a docomo connection/account) WILL work, including 3G, video calling (at the very least with skype/gtalk/etc, not sure about carrier-provided videocall but who uses that?).
Disney stuff will probably only be available to docomo customers accessing the service on a docomo connection, but we could all be surprised there..

Organic EL (also known as OLED, AMOLED, etc) has WAY better "wow" quality than LCD - ie colors stand out more, blacks are deeper, and is very enjoyable. Battery drain is higher when not displaying black, compared to LCD. HD screen is definitely the way of the future however, and 1280x780 or x720 is considered the "standard" resolution for Android 4.0, so probably a good indicator an upgrade is already planned for on the Fujitsu model.

There will barely be any difference, really, 200MHz, when most apps are and always will be more constrained by storage access and network access lag...

It depends on how beefed up the included battery will be... Without any data on that, it's impossible to say.
The more the screen is on, the more battery drains. The more network is used (checking mails, transferring data, etc), the more battery drains.
7) Any guesses on pricing? so I can start saving up
I'd say around the 30,000-60,000 yen range.
8) Anyone or anywhere you can recommend to obtaining this phone? I find Ebay prices quite hefty/a rip off at times.
9) Will the machi-chara (e.g. the ram butler) be on it anymore?
DoCoMo has started including it on the most recent phones, so it might make it to those too. All a guess though.

If my SH-13C is any indication, you'll be fine using 3G
Nice choices and interesting looking phones. Now Japan has joined the smartphone revolution, they are revolutionising it slowly. Not so much iPhone clones as completely independent devices with their own benefits (waterproof, osaifu keitai, one seg, infrared... etc).
If you are talking about high prices on ebay, then you are talking about me, since I drove all the china based sellers and other Japanese sellers off ebay, since they were charging about 150-200 dollars higher prices than I was, and giving the worst customer service.
I'll tell you now, these 2 models are going to be expensive. Just like any new smartphone that is released in japan. Except these are going to be Disney...which means the popularity in Japan is going to be even higher. Disney is HUGE in Japan still, and alot of young people are still in love with the Disney brand.
When patrixl quoted 30000-60000 YEN, I would say its going to be more around the 50000-65000 range when its just released. If you want a good example, you can look at the F-05D, which is currently the Fujitsu top of the line phone. Walk into docomo and even with a 2 year contract, the phone is still going to cost 40000 YEN (525.00 US dollars) without the contract the phone goes for 62500 yen (820.00 US dollars) and then you have to factor in the 3150 yen unlocking fee + shipping.
So if you are planning on getting one , expect to at least pay 850-875 dollars when its first released.
Im not trying to deter anyone from getting the phone, just trying to make people realize that with the current skyrocketed price of the YEN (worlds most expensive currency) all prices are going to be high if you are looking at it from an outside of Japan perspective
Even with this estimate though, I already know its going to be hugely popular. I already have about 16 people asking me to hold one for them, and the info for it was just released
So if you are planning on getting it right away, expect to pay alot. Nothing from Japan is cheap anymore

thank you for your reply.I didn't know that organic EL is actually AMOLED. And you're right, the quality is excellent (love my mp3 for this reason)

thank you for your insight. I didn't think Disney would be this popular since Docomo is releasing other "girlier" versions of their line (Qpot/Arrows Kiss/ F-03D Girls, etc.). Are there any chances the price may go down? Like after the 2012-2013 collectin is released or well into the summer? Because $800+ is quite a price... (by my standards at least)
Disney is still super popular in Japan. The F-03D Girls and the QPOT are also popular amongst women in Japan, but the F-03D GIRLS POPTEEN is more targeted to young teens and the Qpot is Limited only to 50,000 models and I get the feeling its going to be sold out immediately
Of course prices always go down when the next lineup is released, so I would wait or the best bet is to find someone in Japan who can maybe get lucky in a ROM shop and find you one in used or close to new condition for 35000-45000 YEN

Thank you~ I might wait it out then, do you know if the P-05D will be cheaper in comparison since the specs are not as high end compared to the F-08D? Are you by chance going to sell them?
If my suppliers can get them in stock, then I will be able to offer them, but we will just have to see about the price. I won't feel comfortable selling them if they are crazy expensive
