Class 16 EDGE is 216 kbps. When it's behaving well, its around 190kbps, when it's not it's often around the speed of a 56kbps modem. A lot of AT&T's EDGE network doesn't behave well, although some areas do. An iPhone is 100% usable on good EDGE with near full signal, but it degrades quickly, and doesn't seem to work as well when you are moving.
I usually support government regulation, but It is unfortunate that the government over-regulated and killed the AT&T/ T-Mobile Merger The best explanation of the pricing nutiness in the industry. Why Sprint and T-Mo will always suck.
The only way to end the pricing insanity is to eliminate contracts and subsidies.
I want Wifi calling on AT&T. If you text while driving, you're an idiot. End of story.
Yeah me too. Anyone out there on an iPhone who wish to stay Stock, let me know if the tmobile sim trick works on your locked non broken AT&T idevice for getting at the APN setting. Most likely it won't work for you but just wanna confirm so I can update the wiki.

If I am not mistaken, if it's locked, it will say invalid SIM, right?

I ordered a microSIM on Thursday and bought a used AT&T iPhone 4S on Friday. The microSIM (TF64PSIC4MB) arrived on Monday, and I went through with the porting process from Sprint and waited...and waited. This morning (Tuesday) it had still not ported, but I did receive a call saying there was an issue with the porting process because my ZIP code and area code didn't match. After an hour on the phone that problem was fixed and I had phone service, but no data. I used unlockit.co.nz to add the APN info and also tried the iPhone Configuration Utility and neither worked. I figured I needed to wait for a bit, but it's been about four hours and still nothing.
I called Tracfone's executive office and they said that there's been nationwide data outages since yesterday, so that might be affecting me but I'm not so sure. It gives me the "Data service is not activated" error. I've reset network settings, restored, done everything I can think of. I've been an iPhone user since day one (June 2007) and I have lots of experience unlocking and jailbreaking every iPhone since the original.
So right now I have a phone with no data at all, and Tracfone says to wait a week to see if AT&T fixes their data outage issues.

I've experienced numerous data outages on numerous carriers and numerous phones, and I've never gotten the "data service is not activated" error during a normal outage. Numerous people in this thread had to have their accounts re-provisioned by tier 2 tech support to get their data activated. I wouldn't wait a week, I'd just call back a few times until you get someone who can fix it. Good luck!
The speeds everyone has been posting seems really good, especially for prepaid. Thinking about giving up my Sprint SERO for this since the 4g is hit or miss with them and their 3g speeds are horrendous.

It's usable, but incredibly slow. I had my iPhone 4 on T-Mobile, I live in an area with excellent coverage, and 190kbps is much to slow to watch a low quality YouTube video.

Pandora and TuneIn worked most of the time.
It depends on the software. On my E71, I could stream YouTube over EDGE. Pandora works fine on well-behaving EDGE, but I've never gotten it to work on EDGE while moving.

Yeah, I was previously using an iPhone 4S on Sprint, which meant I only had access to their horrendous 3G speeds. I'm gonna miss Google Voice integration, but all the perks in the world mean nothing if I can't get service.
Ok I took the leap.
Purchased a TMob SIM from ST. 3 day shipping so it should be here by Friday.
Question is. Will this be 4g or 3g with normal data limits and are the APN setting for this under ST the same as doing the Nokia switch? Or does the SIM card come with some paper work with the proper APNs?
Ok, found the answer to the APN question in the thread.Still don't know about the 4g or 3g question.

I have a Samsung Exhibit ii and an HTC G2, both T Mobile "4G" phones. With 1 - 2 bars in my office at work I got the following:
Exhibit ii
Download: 3115 kbps
Upload: 673 kbps
Ping: 140 ms
G2
Download: 1408 kbps
Upload: 634 kbps
Ping: 179 ms
So far, I have only activated one T Mobile sim, I just swapped phones for the test. The activation process took ~12 hours to go from an existing ST phone to the BOYD sim including a 1 hour 3 minute call to CS, but it finally started working yesterday evening.
I have the Exhibit 2 as well, after changing the APNs and activating (if I read your post correctly) it should be 1 to 3 hours?
I will not be going from existing ST, this phone was previously on TM, but 60 a month was to much, work gets real slow in the winter and I just couldn't swing the cost any more, but I might be able to do 45 when things get better.
I ordered the SIM and one month service to get started.
Those speed numbers are greek to me. But the Exhibit speeds look much better than the G2.
I guess we will see how things go whn the card gets here. Wish me luck.
