Error 11 while installing Pwn'd 5.0.1 to newer 3GS
Last week I had no trouble upgrading my JB/unlocked iPhone 4 from 4.3.3 to 5.0.1 using PWNageTool 5.0.1, and there were no errors. I've done the Corona update to fix iBooks, and everything is good. I've been jail breaking iPhones since iOS 3.0.1 with decent knowledge of what I'm doing.
I'm trying to do the same thing, with the correct firmware, on my 16GB 3GS which is unlocked and running 4.3.3 jailbreak (not the week 25 or older version of 3GS) . However, I'm getting error 11 in iTunes when I option-restore using iTunes 10.5.2 or 10.5.3. I've tried the option-restore of the custom ipsw with and without Tinyumbrella's TSS server, and with and without the hosts files pointing to the Cydia server. I just can't get around this, even with trying it on two different Macs.
My custom ipsw does not have a BBFW to remove, as per some FAQ I found with Google. Or, I could be doing that part wrong, trying to find it and remove it from an unzipped copy of the ipsw. I even tried to see if I could find the BBFW using Pacifist, but it's not there.
I don't need the unlock, but I keep the old baseband for improved resale value, so I don't want to upgrade to 5.0.1 via iTunes and then jailbreak with RedSn0w, because upgrading the normal way will update the baseband.
Just update it the normal way. If you keep it until the next iPhone comes out after this year, the resale difference for the preserved baseband isn't going to be much for that generation.
I get the feeling that in the not-so-distant future, the larger amount of legitimately unlocked new iPhones are going to start nullifying the value of software unlocked older generations. If I were going to drop money on a used, unlocked phone, it wouldn't be a 3GS...
