My wife was talking on the phone with a reported very good battery strength when the phone just shut down. This is the first time this happened. Any ideas? See screenshot.

I've seen my phone get "stuck" at a particular battery reading for a long period of time once. In my case however, the condition corrected itself when my battery got down to 75%. I haven't seen it happen since, but it seems there might be a bug in the code that will OCCASIONALLY cause the battery meter to fail to update.
You may want to let the battery drain until the phone dies. Then, recharge it to full. Li-Ion batteries have a circuit in them, and it may need to be re-calibrated. It's quite common.

I have no idea why this thread has taken this bizarre turn. There is NO WAY a battery would show flat 100% charge and then suddenly fall off a cliff. As I have already noted, there is a bug in the battery charge calculation that causes that reading to "freeze". This is not a battery issue, but rather a software issue.
The battery doesn't remember its history, but your phone does. (that's why sdx-developers advises people not to wipe battery statistics.) Using a battery more, makes the phone understand it better.
Really? Ok I'll try draining it fully, thank you. I didn't think this type of battery had any type of memory of sorts.
Li-Ions have no memory like a Ni-Cad does. They do have a circuit to prevent going under a certain value, and also to protect from over charging. Anyway, try it and see. You have nothing to lose, and it costs nothing to try. Report back on your results.
Its most likely the fuel gauge going wonky. Sometimes after a large battery stress (reboot, game, what ever else) it will lose track of the voltage and show large drops. Usually after a charge everything is back to normal. If it happens frequently it may be a faulty battery
On my sgs2 sometimes my phone will drop over 30% if im having to reboot frequently
It is not physically possible for the battery to drain that much that fast. all that happens is either a change in the way battery fuel gauge is bring reported or a corruption of the battery stats being kept.
