Because you like VM so much?![]()
Just kidding; I assume that you pay directly on the VM website, which also includes sales tax.
You could save a couple of bucks by using websites such as callingmart to buy prepaid cards.
Other people here might be able to give you more information.

I believe VM collects sales tax, but it just ends up as a balance on the account. At least it worked that way when I had VM (signed up in CA). Going into my last month, I added an exact amount to top off.
Too bad callingmart isn't doing VM anymore. At least I'm using it for TMO now![]()

You can use keepcalling.com for 5% off VM refill PINs. I thought the $30 auto-pay wasn't exclusive to iphone plans, just all beyond talk plans. I'm on Tmobile prepaid now so not keeping up with the details, their $30/mo plan works well and has faster data and more smartphone selections.
My toys:
-Samsung Intercept with 8GB Micro SD card, loaded up with tons of GBA games (Fire Emblem FTW!).
-Motorola RAZR V3m (Dark Pearl Gray) flashed to ViVo with COOL custom skins and all.![]()
-Motorola E815 flashed to Bell and loaded with 100's of Java games!
Hey guys so I'm thinking about going away from VM. The data speeds are incredibly slow and the service simply isn't reliable enough (don't really get signal in buildings). Also in anticipation of the iPhone, I believe that the service could get even worse. Despite all this I will keep this account for some time because I have the 25 dollar plan. My question is, is it possible to keep my plan and get a new number (this way I could pass it off to my brother or mom) but still port my number to Straight Talk?
Thanks Guys!

I did the same thing. I sold my phone and plan to a good friend so he would get my grandfathered rate. Took a new number and gave it to all my contacts. I figured with my number going to a good friend, he would forward any texts to my new number and let tell anyone who called my new number. I had had that number for nearly 10 years. It really wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Have been with StraightTalk for about 4 months now, and it is working great for me. Would I ever go back to VM? Maybe once the new network is built out, but no way before that. And probably not then. Of course, never say never, who knows what will happen in the next couple years. We thought there would never be an iPhone on prepay either, and now it's on a number of them.
I think the steep $650 entry price may keep quite a few folks away from the soon-to-be-outdated iPhone 4S. Those who do buy in will quickly realize the same issues you are having with data and will demand a refund. This iPhone plan sounds like a great deal, until you start looking at the massive up-front costs and ongoing data bottlenecks.
To answer your question about porting an existing number while retaining your old account; I don't think it can be done. Once you start the porting process, it will terminate the current plan with the carrier to which you belong. In order to keep your $25 grandfathered plan, you have no workable option for porting the number to Straight Talk.

The iPhone 4S is not for everyone, too many variables exist to make blanket assumptions regarding end user data experiences on any network.Originally Posted by mfrerkes

CON-Tracts??? We don't need no stinking contracts!
After almost two years on VM with an Optimus V and then a Triumph, I'm switching to T-Mobile prepaid. At the time I originally signed up with VM, the $25/month plan was the best deal I could find. Although the data speeds have been fair to poor, it was usable. For my money, I can't complain too much about the value I got during that time.
Not surprisingly, things change and new plans come along. I'm sure many of you know that T-Mobile has a $30/month prepaid plan (you can't get it in stores, only on the web). This plan includes 100 voice minutes (I don't use many), unlimited text (I seldom text) and unlimited data (I want this). The unlimited data is throttled after 5 GB.
So, you may be saying, this plan is not much different than what I had with VM and it has fewer minutes. The difference is that the data speed is FAST. What TM is calling 4G is their HSPDA+ (they are working on LTE). I don't really care what technology is being used, as long as I get fast data speeds.
On VM, with the Triumph, I might get 1 Mb/s down on a good day, with a tail wind. Usually I'd get a few hundred Kb/s, and frequently in the tens of Kb/s range. Like I said above, fair to poor.
In the past week, I did some testing with two different TM phones. I took the first TM phone and the VM phone all around town and even into some outlying areas (desert, pecan orchards, a mountain). In all cases, TM coverage was better, with stronger signals and faster data speeds. In most cases, the speed difference was ten-to-one.
The first TM phone was a Galaxy Exhibit. Average download speeds were around 2 Mb/s with uploads around 1 Mb/s. I did see a high of 6.5 Mb/s with this phone. The second TM phone was a Galaxy S II. I haven't done the "around town" test yet, but at home I'm seeing 6-10 Mb/s consistently. This is much better than the Exhibit.
I believe that TM only has HSPDA+ 21 here, not HSPDA+ 42. The speeds don't match LTE, like the kid in Best Buy showed me (he has the Verizon unlimited plan), but it's damn fast compared to what I had on VM. And it can only get better, with TM spending billions on a nationwide LTE rollout. I'll probably need a new phone for the LTE, but that will be a few years away.
Oh, and the 100 minutes is not too big an issue for me. I have a VOIP setup at home via Google Voice and do most of my calling with that setup. I have been experimenting with various apps to do the same on the new TM phone. Preliminary results are good. Don't use the TM WiFi Calling feature, as it still uses your plan minutes. The Google Voice mashup on the cell phone gives me unlimited free minutes if I need it.
So, that has been my VM experience. No regrets, but it's time to move on. Now I have to sell my Triumph. What's a used Triumph with original box and accessories worth?
