My plan was to install CM7 on there, do you have any links you can share for this phone?

A bunch. The G2x section of the XDA forums will be immensely helpful. Here are just a few:

    Guide to Modding your G2x

Installing ClockWorkMod Recovery(Included in the above, but posted anyway)-Includes instructions on how to flash back to stock recovery, important if you want to return your phone!

2.3.3 Gingerbread Stock Rom-Needed if you want to return your phone in factory condition, but forgot to use CWM recovery to back up your factory ROM, the one that came with your phone

    ^

The third link above has the instructions on how to root it.

    Few tips

    1. Try undervolting and overclocking your phone. I've used SetCPU (free on xda forums, google "setcpu xda" or something like that, should come up) to do that. You can extend battery life that way.

    2. After you first install ClockWorkMod recovery, go into recovery and backup your phone. You want to keep that backup so you can restore to it the day you decide to return your phone.

    3. Consider getting an extended battery on eBay. I got one for $8.99 on fleabay with a replacement back door that doesn't look or feel to bad. The only downside is my phone is almost twice as thick as before, but not a problem for me. Now my battery lasts a long time.

    4. Juice Defender is always helpful with saving even more battery life.

The G2x is probably one of the most underrated phones of 2011. Its CPU/GPU performance puts it on par with the Galaxy S2 and makes it even superior to the venerable Galaxy Nexus.

But I'm not giving up on VM altogether because my wife is keeping her VM $25/mo plan as she does need the minutes and doesn't use much data.
Which Tmo plan is only $30 per month? Do you have a link?

    My main reasons for leaving:
    1) Network issues (network / data outages, increase in dropped calls, slow data speeds)
    2) Phone selection
    3) Roaming / coverage issues.

I switched to VM about 2 years ago when my T-mobile contract was up. When the Optimus V was released, I bought it in Feb of last year (thank you Target). It's a great little phone. However, it's time to upgrade. I read about 600mhz ZTE junk phones coming out. That doesn't help me.

I'm looking into Straight Talk's BYOD.

I'm not paying $80/mo with a 2 year contract. I get a 25% discount on most carriers, but it's still not enough to justify getting locked in.

I don't blame you at all for wanting to be free of a contract but I'd consider BYOD on postpaid since it's 60 a month (and whatever taxes) for you.

Straight Talk CS is an alleged nightmare

T-mo CS is actually pretty good though, and only $30/mo for 100 minutes/unl.txt/data and $0.10/min for minutes over 100...

I think that's the case with most carriers these days. T-Mobile's CS is also heading down the drain as its management starts cutting call service centers. I won't be surprised if some of those jobs get exported.

A lot of T-Mobiles CS did get exported and those were the jobs Stephenson was referring to when he promised bringing 5000 jobs back to the US if the merger with T-Mobile was approved.

Not sure if I'm getting your drift correctly, but the $1 billion cost-cutting initiative which included a plan to cut an undisclosed number of CS call centers was announced after the acquisition failed. As of yet, there aren't any plans to bring back jobs; if anything, more jobs are getting cut.

How often do you need to call CS? You activate online, you look up your account online, so why do you need to call CS?

Exactly, but if you remember there was a promise to bring back 5000 overseas call center jobs if the merger was approved.

At the end of the day, those numbers would have meant nothing and was part of the empty promises that the government didn't buy.
