I haven't been here very often during the last year or so so I haven't been keeping up on Nextel news.
While speaking with Sprint this morning they offered me a free phone if I gave up my Nextel and switched over to Sprint. They said that Sprint is giving up Nextel next year.
He didn't know if Sprint was selling Nextel or just closing up shop.
Can anybody verify this?

Typical clueless representative, they should know these kinds of things...Anyway, Sprint is shutting down the iDEN network in 2013.

Sprint is not shutting down the iden network, for your information iden belongs do motorola and southernlinc still will offer it, sprint is just going to stop offering it on their end. Also there are many harmony iden providers out there who own their own iden sites and towers. Sprint is just a provider not the owner of iden network.

Sorry, Homeboy is a little bitter.
Here is the information you will need as a iDEN subscriber.
Sprint has targeted 2013 as the shutdown year for the US iDEN network. They will begin "retuning" the network as early as mid month. (Tuning means migrating and shutting down some tower sites that have low usage)
They are offering $.99 upgrades to Sprint direct connect on the CDMA network.
They are "Currently" not forcing any migrations, however I would have to imagine that the forced migration will begin mid year.
Sadly for us, this is the end of the National iDEN network. True, you can sign with SL or a harmony network, but as for nationwide iDEN..... it's almost done.
I expect to be flamed, so I am ready!
If you need more info, shoot me a PM. I have switched over two of our iDEN lines to SDC, and so far it works pretty good!
“Right now, I’m glad we have the iDEN network,” Hesse said. “I wouldn’t have said that 18 months ago, but I am now ... from a financial perspective.”
NEXTEL. Done. I guess that's "Life at SprintSpeed"

Why would you be flamed? What you are saying is completely accurate. Sprint will begin to repurpose the ESMR spectrum that they are licensed for from iDEN to CDMA.
If you want to continue to use iDEN and you live in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, the Florida panhandle or parts of Tennessee you can switch to SouthernLinc. The rest of us will have to do without. I have good iDEN service where I live, but no usable Sprint signal - just enough to keep a phone from roaming, but not enough to actually use.
On the farm we bought some radio batteries and fired up the UHF repeater. Glad I renewed the license. There are some activities that you cannot substute texting, mobile broadband, picture messaging, and dialing for PTT. Farming is one of them. Since there isn't adequate native Sprint signal to operate an IP based PTT solution we will stick with good ole' LMR for now.
Interesting how the demise of the same Nextel that pretty much ended local radio shops and community repeaters will probably resurrect them both in some form.

Yeah ok, dude. Sprint is shutting down their iDEN network, which is clearly what the OP was inquiring about.
No see what your saying is wrong, they arent shutting IDEN down they are just not offering it anymore on their end is what im trying to say. Here in west coast and all over usa, there still is Harmony companies (private owned iden companies) who have their own iden towers and sites who use it for iden phones and so forth. What im trying to say is sprint is just like for example att and tmobile, both are gsm but just because att goes cdma doesnt mean tmobile wont have gsm because att owned it. No, iden belongs to motorola and all the emergency people and radios run on iden as well. Im just clarifying that, not saying sprint will keep offering it to us from their end. Also from what ive herd, people are just waiting for sprint to finalize and and then they will step up and give offers to motorola to offer service in our areas as well. Its all up in the air now so nothing will be known for sure untill mid to end of this year.
No what you're saying is wrong. Nobody ever claimed Sprint is shutting down EVERY iDEN network. I said that they're shutting down THEIR iDEN network. I'm not sure why this simple concept is proving so difficult for you to understand...

Correct. Sprint is shutting down THEIR nationwide iDEN network. The only nationwide iDEN network in the country. What this means is that you can no longer be able to purchase a iDEN handset and use it nationwide.
Sure, you could sign on with Southernlinc, but as for Nextel, Direct Connect, Sprint, whatever you want to call it. is almost......... Done.
You see. Sprint will "re-tune" the network in certain markets starting in April this year, and they plan to BEGIN turning off iDen in 1213. It's planned to be COMPLETED by 2017. There's no saying which markets go first, but it's not an overnight switch.

No waaaay they drag this out till 2017. Mark my words, most subscribers will be off the network by 2013....
I did not know there was an active iDEN network in 1213.....:-)
