I'm using a completely factory 16gb iPhone 3GS on GoPhone. I use the $25 250 minute and unlimited sms/mms package. I have not nor intend to buy a data package as between school, home, and work I live in a massive blanket of wifi. I've been using this phone / setup for about 5 months now. It's flawless, does exactly as everyone says it should, BUT I've got two small questions / occurrences that I'm wondering about.
FIRST: If I'm on wifi, I can obviously use iMessage. The second I'm out of wifi, it obviously doesn't work (as it requires data) but then none of my regular sms messages come through either. I have it turned to "send as sms if no 3g" or whatever that setting is. Then I turn off iMessage and BAM I receive all my regular texts / messages, both from Apple and non-Apple phones. Also, I DO have my APN changed.
SECOND: I receive picture messages no problem. I quit bothering with iMessage after the first couple of days, so for about 5 months I've been receiving genuine MMS no problem, without a data package or being jailbroken. Doesn't everyone say this wont work? Why do I receive mms (cellular data on, 3g data off) when I've not bought a data package, nor do I get charged for any of them? Again, my APN is changed via unlockit...
Thanks for any input! Just trying to learn about why the service is acting the way it is, and I also may be buying an iPhone 4 so I'm just curious as to what I may bump into with that setup.
Although MMS uses a data connection, it does not use chargeable data. No data package is required for MMS. If you block data at the carrier level, MMS will not work.
