Bell Canada Samsung Galaxy Note Paying full price and getting it unlocked

I am not a Bell Canada customer. I just want to pay full price for Bell Canada's Samsung Galaxy Note and want to have it unlocked. What is the process of getting it unlocked from Bell Canada? Do they send the unlock code to the phone right away since you paid the full price for the phone? Do I have to wait 30 days before getting it unlocked? I am planning to use it with Wind. Bell Samsung Galaxy Note does support AWS 1700/2100 band with HSPA+ 21.

    Please advice.

You must have an account with Bell that has a tenure of more than 30 days to have a device unlocked by Bell. If you're planning to use it with Wind, there is no point in buying it from Bell. First of all the outright price is pretty high and Bell makes it ridiculously difficult to buy their device outright. They often make you activate an account before you are even allowed to buy a device outright at their stores. Many 3rd party dealers adhere to the same rules as well. With all the fees you'd incur by doing that, you might as well buy a factory unlocked version from a reputable online dealer.

True, except no warranty with the international models online ?

I would highly recommend a warranty with the Note the screen
has had many reported issues on the INT version.

You should be able to obtain warranty service directly from Samsung. I've bought unbranded Samsung devices and had it serviced directly from Samsung before. In addition, Samsung will also let you bypass the carrier itself when trying to obtain service for a carrier branded device.

i think if you unlock it, the warranty is void anyways. I had the same idea for my blackberry that i want to use with wind, but this time i called up rogers. they said if you unlock it, they wont take it back even if its inside the warranty period. (occured to me later rogers spectrum and wind are diff anyways)

Best to buy from ebay (cheaper) and maybe get a squaretrade warranty?

Well I'm buying it full price, and I'm also gonna unlock it. If any problem I'll send it to Samsung that's it!

Apple. IIRC, they specifically told consumers that any jailbreaking would immediately void their warranty until someone took them to task on it and reported it to the FCC. They were promptly spanked and told that it was illegal.

Unlocking through official means (e.g, unlock code) will not void your warranty. There are no other valid opinions on the matter when it involves unlock codes.

Even if it's not through "official" means, WorldIRC, manufacturers cannot tell you your warranty is void just because it's jailbroken/unlocked/rooted. These are empty threats made by some carriers and manufacturers to force people into doing what "they prefer".

I just wanted to make sure that people were aware of their rights.... I've read stories/threads where people are bullied and lied to just because they were ignorant of the facts. Not trying to start a flame war. :-)

Apple is a different story. Unless you pay your carrier to unlock it, you'd have to jailbreak your iPhone to unlock it. If you bring in a jailbroken phone for service, Apple will deny you service. In addition, Apple technicians are instructed to blacklist your device from service in the future if you bring in a device that is jailbroken. The reason why apple will not service your device if its jailbroken is because the software itself is essentially modified which is against the terms and conditions of your contract.

If you use an unlock code to unlock a device such as the galaxy note, the hardware and the software is not modified in anyway, therefore the warranty is still in tact.

Technically, can you return an unlocked phone? ie. if the retailer knew that it's unlocked, is that a valid reason for refusing a refund or exchange?

They wouldn't know. They don't insert multiple SIMs into the device before they return it.

Can you expound more on this? I bought factory unlocked/unbranded (imported) Samsung phones before and have always thought Samsung wont honor warranty for these imported phones.

I had a Rogers branded captivate which I never used with Rogers. I unlocked it and used it with another provider. Rogers, for obvious reasons, will not send out a phone for repair on your behalf unless you have an active Rogers cell phone account. So when my phone started acting up, I called samsung directly and they emailed me this form with a reference number. Told me to fill it out, box up the unit and take it to a UPS store and send it of to them at their expense for repair. My friend was able to do the same for a Galaxy S II he bought in the UK as well.
