Need MetroPCS phone/service advice - making the switch
Hi All,
I'm going to be making the switch from AT&T to MetroPCS for mine and the wife's mobiles.
We will be using the phones mostly for calls and text, but will do some limited web browsing when needed.
Mostly posting on forums, google searches for info, and logging into the admin panel of servers and shopping carts that we have.
Neither of us is going to be using it for streaming music or watching videos.
Neither of us has any experience with smartphones, but I guess that's what we'll need to get to do web browsing?
We were looking at a friend's Samsung Admire and liked it, and also like the current price, but it looks like MetroPCS isn't allowing it on the $40 LTE plan.
The only phones they are showing for that plan start at $199. Ouch.
What speed difference will I see between the cheaper regular plans and the 4G LTE plans for our type of use?
Is there a comparable phone that will surf the web on the cheaper plans?
I'm old school so a qwerty keyboard would be nice, but not a dealbreaker, I'm sure I could get used to typing on a touchscreen if necessary.
Any advice on what the best, and most affordable solution (phone + plan) would be for our situation is much appreciated.
TIA
the lite $40 plan has a 100 mb limit as far as ur area im in tampa and our speeds are around 4-5 mbps which is really good since ur near miami you more or less will be probaly even faster since miami,ft lauderdale have good 4g coverage
If you can go 4G aka LTE I highly encourage you to do so, even if your browsing is limited. Your browsing will become almost non existent if you choose 1xrtt or try relying on a possible EVDO connection...

Just to clarify, the reason Metro isn't allowing the Samsung Admire on the $40 LTE plan is because it's NOT an LTE phone. You want LTE, a.k.a "4G". That's the phones that get 4 mbps - 5 mbps on Metro. The CDMA-only Androids like the Samsung Admire only run on 1x/EVDO network.
Make sure you are looking at the LTE (4G) Androids. Those are the ones allowed on the $40 LTE plan.
I don't know about where you live, but in many markets EVDO is still not everywhere 1x is. (Metro had publicly said it was only going to be on 20% of cell sites, but others say Metro is really doing more.) Whereas Metro says LTE will be on every cell site in every market. IF it's not now, it soon will be.
1x max speed is 170k, but in real life about 70k. EVDO has faster speeds, but in many markets Metro is capping it at 200k, so as to give LTE more bandwidth as in some markets they are running both networks on the same frequencies. Yeah, someone will probably jump in and say where you live it's not like that, but 1x/EVDO is slower than LTE no matter where you live.

Exactly.
Your creed may be interesting, but your deeds are much more convincing.
Just lurking around here, thinking of making the switch from Sprint to Metro as well. I was looking at the $50 4G LTE plan, and was told by a associate at our local store that I needed to go to the $60 plan, since the $50 only offered 1 GB of data. I called Metro, and the lady I talked to didn't know her butt from a hole in the ground. When I look at the website, I see unlimited web, which I do a lot of surfing, and was told the same thing at corportate. Is this correct? I very seldom use Youtube, which to me is streaming. Can any Metro customers clarify this for me before I look at other options? Thanks in advance for your reply.

many on here have streamed, downloaded, surfed, etc like no ones business without going over the 1GB mark. They don't count everything towards the 1GB. At least for now...
LOL i just checked my online data usage and got a shocker!!!! when i logged in and checked my data usage it went from being 20% before my bill date on the 6th to being 100% today and i havnt even streamed anything since last week. so i had to call metro and verify what was my data usage the metro guy checked for me and said i was back down to 0% and not to worry what i was seeing on the site was a glitch and to give it a few days to let it reset itself lol.
