Only required for out-of-US LD calls. In any case I have the access number programmed into my phone on a quick key - I also have my 10 most common called numers on 10 other keys, tied to their rather neat web-based international number substitution system, so no overdialing required for them.
I don't see how your tracfone solution is any better than an unlimited t-mobile plan. If I ever needed to call outside the US/Canada I just set up a voip.ms DID to handle that...
Yes, I realize this and was using "long distance" to signify non-US calls because with US carriers (unlike Canadian carriers), they charge local rates to call nationwide and to receive nationwide. I can take my US prepaid phone (T-Mobile, AT&T, Red Pocket Mobile, etc.) and regardless of what area code it has, I can use it in a different US city to call another US city without incurring any long distance charges. This is the way it is with all the US prepaid plans that I'm familiar with.
For me, since I only call US/Canada, I like the simplicity of direct dialing at low rates with Red Pocket Mobile or using Google Voice on an Android phone (and any US SIM). It is very easy just to dial the number directly from the keypad or call it up from the contacts list (without worrying about an intermediary number to call or placing pauses in the calling string)
Fido (monthly plan - personal/data):Novatel Wireless MC950D / Nokia CS-18
Rogers (pay as you go - Canadian prepaid): "Fido" (unlocked) Samsung Nexus-S
Rogers (monthly BIS data plan): unlocked Blackberry Bold 9700
Red Pocket Mobile (US prepaid): unlocked Sony-Ericsson w300i

There are plenty of solutions for this. On my iphone i just use a calling card app and click the contact i want to dial - it does the rest. It's no more difficult than dialing from the contact list itself.
I imagine there are similar apps for android/bb as well...
