What are the trade offs for turning off 3G?

I recently acquired an Optimus T. I try to max out the battery and I am thinking of turning off 3G because I don't have a data plan. My understanding is 3G is also used for voice but coverage for 3G isn't very good in my area. Would turning off 3G give my battery a boost? Would it reduce my voice coverage?

Since you don't have a data plan, you could turn off data altogether. Uncheck Settings>Mobile Networks>Data Enabled. You should see an improvement in battery life, especially in stand by.

I tried the Juice Defender free on the Optimus T. Wasn't all that impressed. I left Wi-Fi "On". After 10 hours overnight the phone is down to 61%. About the same as before. In comparison, if I keep the Wi-Fi "Off", even without Juice Defender, I get 90% in the morning. In fact, the phone had gone 2 days with light use (1 or 2 calls) and stay at 50%.

Normally I turn off Wi-Fi and GPS and blue tooth to preserve battery life
And turn on as needed and many have reported increased battery life
With JD after reading the reviews I decided to install it and I was impressed
With the 2G/3G toggle automation may have saved a few more hours of
    Battery life as well.

I went to the extreme. I turned off 3G, packet data, Wi-Fi and bluetooth. I left the phone for 12 hours. Battery life is 97%.

I have the free edition of Advanced Task Killer and Juice Defender. Both disabled. I did not found them very useful. At least not with their default setting.

I think some tasks running in the background constantly trying access the network. I am suspecting Google Map.

    It is next to useless.

Most of the time it is vague things like "Android OS" or "Phone Standby". I bet it is because some background process waking up the CPU to send data from time to time.

    No Juice Defender needed.

I am wrapping up my test. Phone went for 8 days with minimal use, Battery Status at 20%.

Just turn off Packet Data, 3G, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. This phone is amazing!

does anyone know if there is an app that would allow you to schedule to turn off data and anything else you want on your phone? i know there is an app that you can set to turn off all sounds and notifications so that your phone doesn't wake you up in the middle of the night if you get an e-mail, but it would be good to ahve an app that can also toggle off your data, 4g, bluetooth, wifi and some other stuff between certain hours that you set.

I found that the effect of turning off 3G is not significant. Around 10% or less. The biggest saving is achieved by disabling data all-together.
