Can I take the data plan and add it to another device?

I don't think Rogers will allow me to pay $10/month to access the 6GB that I already have access to. Regardless, I don't want to pay $10/month to access the data that I'm already paying for. Unfortunately Apple still doesn't have an iPhone with LTE yet. I really want LTE so I'm thinking of buying the Sierra Wireless 754S. Then my iPhone will have LTE speed at the expense of me having two devices (not really a problem since I carry a messenger bag or briefcase with me). Unfortunately my data plan is embedded with my voice plan when I bought my iPhone 4 from Rogers. I know that Rogers can add a code to my account to enable access to the LTE network. Will Rogers allow me to split the data plan off my iPhone? I still have about 1.5 years left on my contract.

    Hi Sgt_Strider,

The LTE network will only work if you have both an LTE compatible device, SIM card and data plan. You can set up a data share plan between your iPhone and mobile internet device, however you would only be able to get LTE speeds if they are both LTE devices as it is hardware dependent.

The only way you could have done this is to pay the $10 to share the data but its too late now because you would've had to switch to the newer LTE compatible 6GB plan which was discontinued as of yesterday.

Rogers_Kate, I think if the OP bought the LTE device he was referring to he would carry it in his travel bag and share the data to his iPhone over WI-FI. OP, is that what you meant? In doing so you'd probably get *close* to LTE speeds.

It's always been a bit of a hastle to switch to an LTE plan, because it involves renewing your contract and activating a new SIM card. Best case scenario, you would do that, then either swap the SIM between your iPhone and your other devices, foregoing LTE speeds on the iPhone, or else share the data to your iPhone from another LTE-capable device over WIFI, making voice calling a hastle. And from what I've heard, the LTE experience really isn't that much better than the HSPA one. And of course, now you would have to get a more expensive data plan anyway, unless maybe the social media team could help you retain your 6 GB.

You may well wish to wait for a little while...

I was also wondering whether the same could be done for me. Could I drop my $30/6GB on my iPhone and get $50/10GB with a 754S Rocket Hotspot without incurring any fees. Then I would have LTE with my iPhone 4S, iPad etc. The truth is I don't think it can be done though.

Probably isn't too great of an idea anyway. I hear the 754S has about 4 hours of battery life over LTE.

You're right it can't be done without incurring additional fees.

There is an extended battery available so I'm not concerned about the battery life.

I think you're confused on the situation. Obviously I'm going to get a device that's capable of accessing the LTE network. I don't want to pay $10/month to access the data that I'm already paying for. What I want to do is to spin off the data plan from my current voice+data for my iPhone 4. Then that data plan will be activated on a LTE sim card for use with the Sierra Wireless 754S. My iPhone 4 will then tether to the hotspot for data.

Since you're with Rogers, can you confirm if this is possible?

I think he may be referring to the DECF for canceling the data on the phone.

From my experience you aren't able to transfer a data plan from one line to another if on contract. There's also no code to enable LTE on older data plans. The only code I am aware of is apn3con to enable BB service. The 6gb LTE addon with sharing was extended and it is still available but it will renew your data and remove data credits.
I do not currently work in the industry or represent any wireless providers.

The $10/mth data share plan is not LTE ready so even if you had a LTE sim and device you won't get LTE speeds. At least that what I was told by my support line. I'd test it myself but I don't have an LTE device to test with.

The $10 data sharing does give you lte, as long as you have the new lte 6gb sharing soc code.

    Hi Sgt_Strider

I’m not sure what you mean exactly by “spin.” The data embedded in your plan is set. You can change to a different voice and data plan, or a voice only plan with the data as an add-on. If you cancel the data on your iPhone altogether a data cancellation fee may apply depending on the term associated with your plan. If the data embedded in your existing plan is shareable, as you know, you can add the Sierra Wireless as a second line for $10. Keep in mind even if you tether the data from the air card you will still not get LTE speeds on your iPhone as it’s not compatible and the speeds will downgrade when tethering.

    Sneakz,

You may incur data cancellation fees unless you have no term left on your data plan. The rocket hotspot would be considered a second line and is independent of your iPhone line.

    Cheers,
    @Rogers_Kate

    Kate,

I don't understand how everyone gets it, but you. Basically I want the data plan to be a separate plan altogether. This way the voice plan will be for my iPhone 4 and then the data plan will be moved to a different sim card for use with the Sierra Hotspot. Does this make any sense to you?

Technically I'm not cancelling anything and I am still fulfilling my contract obligations. Rogers is still going to get the same amount of money from me. Why wouldn't I get LTE speed if I tether my iPhone 4 to the Sierra Wireless hotspot? It doesn't make any sense when it's the Hotspot that is connected to the LTE network and not the iPhone 4.
