I found from this website called Prepaid Phone News that Tmobile branded Android phones will not work with with the limited data content that is available through Tzones(?). Do you know if this is true? If so, that would be a bummer. So is it better to get an AT&T branded phone to unlock instead?

"The free sites should work on just about any T-Mobile or unlocked GSM phone, including the iPhone. The only exception is T-Mobile branded Android devices, which are explicitly blocked. To use the free sites set the APN to wap.voicestream.com."

Here is a HoFo Wiki which adresses that for TMo branded Android phones. It looks fairly updated. I've read a few other threads that suggest that TMo is removing Tzone access by IMEI number lately. Non TMo branded Androids might be next. It seems to be a crap shoot.

Thanks for the info. Oh no, I don't see the Comet there. Does anyone have a data point for the Comet or OptimusT FWIW?

Your Optimus T was defective. I have one (refurbished, no less) and get great call quality with no popping sounds. It also works out of the box as a wifi hotspot, no rooting required (but of course you need to have a data plan active). It's about the best entry-level android phone T-Mobile has, particularly if you can pick one up on one of their $99 or less sales – or with a free refill card promotion.

    Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.2.18887/27.1169; U; en) Presto/2.8.119 Version/11.10)

I would stay away from refurbished Optimus. There seems to be a lot of problems with this line. Mine bricked after the 90 warranty.

Yeah, I should have returned it as it was likely defective. And agree that the Optimus (regardless of carrier) is a excellent, bug free, and easy to use android. I'm checking Craigslist for a good used one as there are many areas of N. Cal that my VM Optimus won't get a signal.

As my luck would have it, I received my comet phone without the $50 refill card in the box. CSR wants me to activate phone sim card first and call the prepaid department and ask for $50 credit added to the new account - not exactly my intended use. Is this going to work? How is the prepaid department going to know what was ordered through Tmobile.com? Should I call another Tmobile.com CSR and ask for the physical $50 refill card?

I didn't do anything to the phone to get it to work as a hot spot.
Bit the bullet. Phone arrives today. We'll see how it goes.

    Ohh no...

Update: Order received and the prepaid card was missing too. After playing CSR roulette and transferred like 7 times I gave up. Phone is going back.

posting again since I can't edit the previous post anymore.
Tmobile called me back and left me a message to get my $50 dollar credit.
Sure enough I called back and got my code.

Glad you got your code, and you can put that airtime credit on any T~Mobile phone you have, not just the one you bought to get the $50 card.

Did you get $50 refund to CC or $50 refill card? Tmobile called me back too, but I got a $50 PIN read to me over the phone. She said it is valid for 60 days, but I am counting on it lasting longer. Would 150 days be pushing the limit for PIN expiration?

When the Nuron's were shipping without the MicroSD cards and many of us were getting $30 in airtime credit for that. I had called and got a PIN for $30 and when I put it on one of my accounts it came up as invalid, so I called back and the man gave me another and I put it on the account as I was still on the phone with him in case that one was invalid too, it worked.

I would not risk hanging onto it too long without making absolutely sure it is valid.

Yep that is exactly what I did. I put it on my daily driver since I was running low on funds there. I'll probably keep the comet with $10 bucks and use it as emergency phone/hotspot.

Yesterday I tried the hotpot and it worked very good. I was even able to stream Prime videos to my daughter's Kindle Fire on the way to a friend's house (long drive on major freeway). She was able to watch an entire episode (~30mins). We used about 170MB on the $3 plan. I used the rest to stream mp3's on the way back to get my money's worth.

I just got a code like you did and loaded it to another account. I did not ask for expiration but 150 days may be pushing it.

My Optimus T arrived today without the $50 card. I called customer service and the first guy I talked to said it was a known problem and lots of people didn't get the $50 card with their phone. Then the bounced me around to FOUR other people to get the $50 credit. Every time I had to start again: order number, name, address, etc before being put on hold. Then they would came back 5 minutes later and say: "I'm sorry, I can't help you with that. Let me transfer you to a different department." Twenty-five minutes later they applied $50 to my existing prepaid account.
