I spend a fair bit of time on my phone using an ssh client. Swype on a virtual keyboard is great for typing english text. Not so great though for using vi to modify a perl script. If nothing else, the virtual keyboard just takes up too much screen real estate on a phone.

That said, I realise that most people aren't using their phones as portable devices for systems administration.

I do tend to use Swype for short messages in English

I do however understand your plight entirely. The idea of the Razr Maxx with a battery that might actually last an entire day is very enticing. The Droid 4 with a physical keyboard also calls out my name. A Droid 4 Maxx might be exactly what I'd need to break out the checkbook and buy one unsubsidized. But seriously I'm sick to death of the idiots who wish to insist their willingness to be bound to a virtual keyboard supercedes my wish to have the option of having a physical keyboard available. So for you idiots which insist the virtual keyboard is the only way to go, shut up and accept the fact that not all of us need to be bound by your preferences and desires, some of us actually can think for ourselves and have our own personal likes, dislikes and preferences. We're not out here telling you that you have to have a phone w/a physical keyboard, we'd just like the option of having one for ourselves.

Aw what the hell. I'm bored so I'll play.

Perhaps if these anti-physical-keyboard fanatics free their minds from Mr. Jobs (RIP) way of doing things they can understand that addition of options is a good thing. I would've thought that the iSheep mentality would've died with him. The iSheep at heart physical keyboard haters who are on the Android train don't realize the basic concept of Android: to have a choice. To suggest that choice is "unnecessary", a "crutch", or "training wheels", suggests Communist ideals.

Playing with the Maxx in the store for just a few minutes a couple of times, I was surprised that the on screen keyboard wasn't that bad, and swype actually worked well and I would imagine that more I get used to it the faster I would get. But one thing I didn't think about was how the keyboard takes up almost the whole screen. Does that become a big problem for anyone that you have this beautiful big screen and barely have any usable space because the keyboard takes up the whole thing? Its a tough call now between being having a battery that will last all day or having a keyboard.
You could purchase a portable pocket charger for the Droid 4 and have battery life that's as good as the Razr Maxx or better.

Or you could get a Galaxy Note with, LTE, a removable 2.5 amp battery, SD card, and a big 5.3" Amoled HD display so you can have screen space AND a virtual KB. Then carry a "portable pocket" USB hard KB for heavy lifting docs. That way you also have the "option" of a spare battery.

If you're OK with virtual KBs, then it seems to me the Note by itself -- even as big as it is -- would be easier in the pocket than a D4, or even a RAZR, plus a charger or power-pack.

I never even considered a Galaxy Note, but how would that be easier in the pocket than a Maxx? It is quite a bit wider and longer. Besides, that isn't on Verizon anyways, right?

Verizon will get the Galaxy Note in the form of the Galaxy Journal sometime this year.

I would really like to get a maxx myself, but the non-removable battery is a deal breaker for me, just like it was a huge turnoff on the iPhone.

But I always liked the physical keyboard on my d1 and d2, but with a larger screen I rather not have a keyboard.

Do you read the posts you quote?
It wouldn't at all be easier in the pocket than a RAZR MAXX. But it would be easier to pocket than a D4 or a RAZR *and* a charger or power-pack.

There are "rumors" that vzw may pick up the Note.

    Edit:

    I guess that's more than a rumor.

Pretty well actually. Swype helps a lot for this.

Despite being a lover of Swype, I agree... BS, Swype is not even close to being a replacement for a physical kb.
