Broken Captivate, Can it be salvaged?

I dropped my Captivate about a week ago. I still have it, but the screen doesn't function at all. I can see a crack in it, but it just remains black. The device is powered on, I can hear it beep etc.

Is there a cheap way of fixing the screen?

I want to at least be able to get my pictures etc off of it. I can't see the screen to put it into mass storage mode...

You can Google search for a replacement LCD screen (glass and digitizer combo) online and do the replacement yourself following the below video on Youtube. If you don't want to do the repair yourself consider sending it in to someplace that does it.

I've replaced several screens (HP iPaq, Palm Tungsten TX) following illustrated guides or videos of step by step directions I've found on the internet. It may seem daunting at first, but once you've seen how it's done in the video, it's not that scary to do.
If you feel that you have to correct some of my posts for my capitalization of some of my words, then just bear with it. It's just a discussion forum where some may be limited by time to answer in well-versed and eloquent sentences.

When asked if I see the glass half empty or half full, I responded I see just a glass of water.
Now you know how I think.
