Smile iPhone 4 for Boost or Virgin

I have googled for an answer and have received nothing short of confusion.

In short, is there any way to unlock an AT&T Iphone 4 to use on the Boost network??

If not, Virgin Mobile? This is for use in NY.

I am about to buy a used Iphone 4 tomorrow and want to make absolutely sure! Thanks everyone!!

    The answer is: it depends...
Is the network gsm or cdma? I'm guessing it's the latter. You have to convince the carrier to accept your phone on their network. If you can, you'll have to configure it to work with their network. Most of the time, however, you can't convince the carrier to accept your phone. If you look around, there's a thread on someone who has configured their phone for metro pcs. It'll give you an idea of what to expect with cdma.

Nope the iPhone can't be used on the iden networks, you can maybe flash a Verizon iPhone 4 to virgin since the Verizon iPhone 4 supports CDMA

The gsm iphone 4 doesn't have the hardware to work with a cdma network. That's why apple released a cdma phone. You're trying to put diesel into a car that takes unleaded.
The 4S has dual hardware, but it's highly unlikely you'd be able to bring a 4S that's been used with at&t to a cdma network.
While this is a more subtle issue than others, this still would've been found out from reading archives of boards like this and macrumors.

Boost phones use CDMA primarily now.
