My GN is set to not use data when roaming, yet I have 15$ tacked on for a few megs of data when I was near Tremblant this weekend. I also remember when I turned it on, it downloaded a few emails.
Why is it using data when it's roaming in Wind Away?!
It's a known issue with the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus. Apparently there's a radio update to fix it, but you're screwed for now unless Wind can disable roaming data for you on their end.
Please don't PM me asking questions that could very easily be asked publicly.
Band I/1 = IMT, 2100 (rarely wrongly referred to as 1900/2100)
Band II/2 = PCS, 1900 (never wrongly referred to as 1800/1900)
Band III/3 = DCS, 1800 (never wrongly referred to as 1700/1800)
Band IV/4 = AWS, 1700 (often wrongly referred to as 1700/2100)
Band V/5 = CLR, 850
Band VIII/8 = GSM, 900
Until the radio is updated, can't you just turn-off data altogether (not just roaming)when you are outside of a WIND zone?
That requires effort.
What if you're driving from Toronto to Kitchener, and want to get traffic updates in Google Maps Navigation? You'd have to disable it while on the 401 in Milton, and re-enable it when you hit 6 South (again, on the 401).
I'm really surprised WIND is selling a device which such an obvious failing on their network.

I agree it's inconvenient. I was just wondering what the options are for not getting dinged while roaming.
Here are your options:
1. *recommended* Flash the KRKL1 radio. It fixed this problem for me and works great.
2. Every time you turn on your phone, go into the mobile networks settings and manually select Wind Home. Your phone won't connect to Wind Away and you won't get charged but you also won't be able to make/receive calls/texts when you're not in Wind Home.
Where is the bug? If you run tasker is the %ROAM variable set correctly? If so you could have tasker shut off mobile data when roaming. Otherwise you could at least have data disabled by default and automatically enabled at places you commonly go.

The faulty radio causes the phone to identify as "not roaming" when it's on WIND Away.
However what you could do on Tasker is set up a profile that enables data when the network name = "WIND Home", and disables it when it equals anything else.
I can verify that both the KRKL1 radio and the Japanese SC04DOMKKD radio have the roaming bug fixed.

I've had my network name come back as "302490" a few times.

Fair enough. You could also do it as a negative option profile in Tasker to accommodate both.
Create a new profile.
1st Context: %TNET is not equal to "WIND Home"
2nd Context: %TNET is not equal to "302490"
Entry task: Disable mobile data
Exit task: Enable mobile data (actually this is optional because Tasker will flip the mobile data back on if it was on, or leave it off if it was off; if you do put in this exit task, it means when you turn off data manually, it will potentially re-enable spontaneously)
The profile will also trigger data off when you have no signal or emergency calls only, but that should not be harmful.
The only thing I'd change about that mobile data tasker script is have it toggle the apn to a bogus value as well as turning off mobile data. Just in case some insane app turns it on. Just to be safe. Roaming data charges are no joke!
If the network name variable TNET is not monitored tie it to a cell id change, which is.
