Hey folks, just finally upgraded to a smart phone. Was about to pay my bill when I noticed - they refunded my $10/25M plan from my old dumb phone and charged me for a whole month of $30 data plan, even though I bought the phone on the 14th and my cycle starts on the 16th - two days of usage! Before I call them up & start yelling, I wanted to check in here & see if that could possibly be correct...
Thanks!
Clearly, someone backdated your new data feature to essentially treat it like you had it for the full bill cycle. There was no need to do so except to give themselves a commission feature credit for 30 days. Absolutely no excuse to stick you with the extra charge when you would have only had a prorated charge of 2 days for the new feature. Only legitimate reason would have been if you had exceeded your prior data plan usage. I would call customer service to discuss it with them. Should be no problem to apply a credit to your account.
If I'm annoyed and you're annoyed, does that make us a paranoid ??
Sarcasm is a fine art...
"Don't believe everything you think"
It's not a matter of if you win or lose, it's how you assign the blame
Cool, thanks for the back-up! That is what I was thinking, it is sensible/reasonable to have a two day prorated charge. But reasonable & Verizon don't often go together... I'm going to call tomorrow & will let y'all know the outcome.
Thanks!

No, charged for two months. I bought the new phone on 1/14/12. Got a full refund on the old plan, even though there was only two days left. Then charged "Data Package 4GB 12/17 - 01/16 $30.00/mo / full month on new plan" (Although I was downgraded from 4GB to 2 GB when I went from GNex to 4S... D'oh!)
Then there is another charge:
Data Package 4GB 01/17 - 02/16 (month in advance) 30.00
So they charged a for a whole month when in actuality I had used it for two days.

The month in advance is nothing new. Did you go over your old data limit? If so, that is why they backdated it. Also, you will lose the 4GB when you go to a 3G only phone. You will only have 2GB.

What!? Is this something new at their call centers? Because they never had this when I worked there up until last June. Maybe that explains why this idiotic rep one time moved me to a mobile to any mobile promo plan without my permission when I had merely called to ask her about the details of it. She probably did it to get some commission, if that exists with the care reps now.
You have a choice to back-date or pro-rate. Like the others said, don't ask to pro-rate if your pro-rated usage will be over the limit (you used more than 2/30 of the monthly GB allowance in those two days).

I offered a possible explanation after working in a call center for another carrier for over 7 years. I didn't make it up, I have personally seen it happen from time to time.
Hi folks! Thanks so much for all the advice. I definitely did not go over on my old plan. But good point HF305! I have to make sure that I didn't go over on the new plan, didn't think of that. By my calculations, 4Gb(4096M)/30*2= 273.1M. I don't think I did that in the first two days...
Oh, it was an in-store salesperson that did it, not a call center person, if it makes a diff...
Gonna call soon, wish me luck
The reps will sometimes add features etc for the extra commission, I've had it happen a few times
As an ironic coincidence, I used to be on an offline audit team that reviewed account changes/credits for another carrier and I would run into similar situations like I described earlier.
