Dell Voice keeps you Covered in Wind Deadzone (or other city) where there is WiFi

So, Dell Voice launched a free service today, and I saw a GREAT use for it.

It's a bit like Google Voice, but not near as many features...

Dell Voice is a free VoIP service that uses 3G data or WiFi.

You simply install Dell Voice App on Android, and get a free phone local phone number.

You then set your Wind Phone to forward conditionally "when unreachable" to your Dell Voice number, and then you'll get your call routed through wifi.

I tested it out on my phone, and it works like a charm!

You can also call out for free from the Dell Voice app, but outgoing caller ID is your Dell Voice number.

The best thing about it is that it's free and solves a problem I've been having since I've joined Wind...

Hope it helps some of you with coverage gaps, where you do have wifi...

Still, because you can't receive SMS at the Dell number, it bumps into the same limitations most Canadian VoIP services have in trying to replace mobile numbers.

Yeah, I installed Dell Voice a few days ago, quality is good enough for a free service, but Skype/sip apps like sipDroid are better still. Though like the OP, I will use this when i'm on vacation in another country with access to WIFI and have my WIND Number/Landline forwarded to my Dell Voice number.

Also keep in mind the app is a battery drainer. I'd kill the process when you are not using it.

Technically not feasible on those since their networking stack is FAR too primitive.

Great little app, have it working on Android, iPhone and PC so far. Voice quality is pretty good through wifi and 3G. Can't beat the price.

So if i was to travel to USA tomorrow, should I change my voice mail settings to conditional or non-conditional? Also how is it done on galaxy nexus? I read somewhere that if I take the phone outside wind home and even if I don't pick up a phone call, I'll still be charged long distance if somebody leaves me a voicemail. Is that true?

yes, you will be charged for a voice mail deposit whenever roaming. How much charge depends on how long the actual message deposits are, and where you are roaming in the world.

To use dell voice effectively, just forward your wind number to it, unconditionally (sorry, don't know the menu options on galaxy). This way, all incoming calls terminate to your dell voice number. You can still keep your wind phone on to receive free incoming text (if you want....but make sure you turn 3G data off).

You could do that with tasker. Use the gsm codes to control forwarding whenever you connect to wifi and have it dial those automatically when connecting to your wifi.

You would need cell reception obviously for that to work.

OK it's installed and I got my #. Seems pretty good though haven't made a call.

1 undesirable feature: you can't turn it off. Anytime data is on, so is this app. And as someone said: a battery drainer.

So now I've got my # secured, i uninstalled, re downloaded, but haven't signed in. Won't do so till I need it.
