This, paired with unlimited data... it means I can make my long distance calls on my cell for free, finally. No waiting for Google Voice either.
No Manitoba numbers yet... sounds like they will need to wait for the new area code to come into effect (which I think is the end of the year). I picked up a GTA number instead, as I have family there - it's a "local call" for them to call my cell now!
FYI
I see vonage came out with a new app just the other day as well. Vonage Mobile you do not need to be a existing customer and it includes some free calling and DID numbers, but have not looked to see if MB numbers are available yet.
Well that was a waste of my time. After giving it all my personal information (for 911 they claim) found out there is only 4 Provinces listed (BC, AB, Onto, Quebec) did you know Canada only has 4 provinces? And to top it off you can't call out for free. You need to buy world credit $5 being the lowest denomination. I wish these people would be honest up front when download the app in the first place. Hope this helps anyone else that may be looking into this app.
Update! I guess I don't live or call what's considered "most of Canada". I found all the details at www.dellvoice.ca/cityListing and apparently Winnipeg constitutes for Most of Manitoba, and Regina and Saskatoon for most of Saskatchewan. Typical...
You don't have to buy any credit to call out, at least not to any Canadian numbers.
I picked up a Hamilton-area number, because I have family in that area. Now they can call that number and it's a local call.
Do you know if I would get charged long-distance (by MTS) if I picked up a long-distance incoming call (on my MTS number)? I might just have the Dell Voice number forwarded to my regular number from now on, so that my family isn't charged LD for calling my cell...

I would suspect that as long as you are in your local calling area you would be OK to forward your fongo number to your cell and not incur long distance charges HOWEVER if you are outside your local calling area you will be billed long distance charges.
Also not all Canadian numbers work for free, just the ones that are on a local exchange to the list of cities identified. I found most rural numbers in MB and SK I tried to call where needing world credits. For example any Yorkton Sk number or Brandon, Dauphin MB numbers don't work or anything between. Basically if its a long distance call (not local) from Winnipeg its not a free call on dell voice and world credits are needed. There local tail end hop off is located in Wpg for MB and they would need to add more in other cities to take advantage of free calling.
For example if you and I had a VG 204 (Cisco voice gateway) setup in each our houses we could tunnel all the voip traffic to each other over the cloud (internet) and any number that is local to you would be a local call for me and vice versa. As I would have your house as a tail end hop off and my house would be a tail end hop off to you (connection to local POTS) to plain old telephone systems. So you can see if everyone in every town and city had a voice gateway and we all agreed to let each other use the gateways we could all have free calling all over the world forever totally bypassing a telcos long distance. This is what telco's do, so essentially they are charging us for long distance and they don't incur any charge themselves, see how profitable long distance can be for telephone companies.... that's why some providers do packet shaping on VoIP packets and protocol's, and why these voip service work better on some ISP's than others. Ex WiFi vs 3/4G, but that's a whole another story.
The call quality is to low to actually use it too, tried calls to Ottawa and halifax and while free the other end couldnt hear us and we couldnt hear them or it was too choppy to even try.
Call quality has really improved since the last update - I can call or receive a call and carry out about 85% of a conversation. What I've been doing is calling my relatives in Hamilton using Dell Voice, who then call me back on my Dell Voice number, which after 4 rings gets forwarded to my MTS number, thereby using cellular communication (perfect quality) rather than internet-based. Free long distance!
Been using Talkatone for a few weeks now. HOLY $#17!!!!!
Works great. Free. Best part, it uses Google voice.
Search XDA for how to set up. You have to log into Google once to set it up. Then you get free calls in Can and US.

You only get an American number with Google Voice though, right?
The way I have it set up - I have a GTA number that I can either call out or receive calls with. But lately what I've done is have the GTA number forward to my MTS number, so when my relatives call from the GTA, it's a free local call for them, and after 4 rings it forwards to my MTS cell number, which is a local call for me to receive! When I pick it up, it's using a cellular connection instead of data, so it's very clear with no delay.
