The risk is that if you brick your phone it won't be covered by warranty. You do so at your own risk. Potentially, a jailbroken phone is more prone to malware. With a little caution when downloading from non-approved sites you should be OK.
If I'm annoyed and you're annoyed, does that make us a paranoid ??

Jailbreaking also has a tendency to cause strange issues, like increased battery drain, strange crashes and phone lockup. Depending on what you install. Cydia doesn't appear to validate OS version or device on anything so you can easily install an app designed for iOS 3 on iOS 5 have have it do odd things because it hasn't been developed or updated for a long time.
So unlike the app store you need to research what you install a bit.
It's totally up to you really. And yes there are risks and downsides to it. I had my 3GS jail broken for a while before it died. However it did have its issues of going into safe mode, things not working and what not. The other downside is if anything was wack on it, I wouldn't be able to hit the apple store as they do not touch jail broken phones.

If you jailbreak your device anytime a firmware update is issued if you update the firmware it will invalidate your jailbreak (and unlock if you've done that as well.) Sometimes even if a jailbreak is available the new version will have an incompatible baseband and you won't be able to unlock.

JB is as safe as the user makes it. If you d/l pirated apps, then it won't be safe at all. These pirated apps cause a number of issues. The pirated apps are more likely to crash your phone and act as spyware.
The other issue is people who load their phones with a million jb apps. Unlike the app store, there's no guarantee these apps will play nice with one another. You increase your risk of instability the more apps you install.
If you're smart, you won't have any problems.
FYI, you can't brick your phone with software. Software issues are always recoverable. People who use brick for software issues are ignorant.

Yup jailbreaking is safe but the tweaks that open up to you are like hookers.
They get you excited because they are cheap to get and look hawt from far. But chill with the wrong one and your device catch nasty bugs and STD resulting sometime in death. But at least their is itunes restore compared to real life.
Although once apple rolls out 5.1 you outta luck if you try to restore as you wont be able to get your JB back. Because apple changed how they sign the files. So you should be using this time and gift from apple to
Install all the hacks you can get your gruby paws on to see which ones you like and then clean the device and reinstall the minimum you like.
Although the hackers prolly let apple believe it has succeeded and has something up their crafty sleeves.
On yah I wouldnt worry about JB and warranty. Apple don't give a sh-it they'll take back just about anything if you know how to approach them.
I'll give you an example. I had 900+ iPad2 3G. I really went mad with the tweaks and eventually installed something that messed with the dock connector. Fried the dock connector circuitry!
No pc or Mac or iTunes would connect to it. Unable to restore it back to stock. Factory reset on jailbroken ipad2 is useless, only result in boot loop . Have to take it To apple to get a new one. What to do?
I uninstalled everything, removed all my info, removed all cydia tweaks, then last removed cydia. Went to store apple looked at it for 3 minutes literally, apologized to me and gave me a new one on the spot.
The key is as long as you can make it look stock apple just don't give a crap.
I'm kind of amazed at how this board has devolved over time. It used to be a place where you could get pretty good information, but not so much anymore...
Seriously, "fried the dock connector circuitry" with software mods?
OP asked a smile question, wondering if it was safe to jailbreak, regarding virus exposure. Based on the cryptic portion, I'm assuming that OP is also interested in pirating apps.
The simple answer is, "Yes". It is perfectly safe to jailbreak. You will not "fry" anything. You will not invalidate your warranty. I've yet to hear of a real virus out in the wild that anyone has to be worried about. Installing *********** is safe, too, and you're not going to increase your exposure to viruses or spyware using it - but we can't talk any more about it here.
You're much more likely to get spyware from the App Store (or what's already built in the phone) than anything from Cydia, as long as you don't add any unofficial repo sources.
Having a jailbroken phone is just like having administrator access on your computer. If you act like an idiot and install every system tweaking program that you can find, you will eventually bork your system. If you take it easy and don't change many things and make intelligent decisions, you can improve the way your device works to a great extent.
My 4S runs much better than a stock device. My battery lasts significantly longer than any of my stock coworkers' comparable phones. My signal is stronger than theirs while in our office building, because the 3G is messed up in that area and they can't force 3G off on the 4S, but I can. My phone is more secure, thanks to an active dev community that continuously finds ways to plug privacy and security holes.
Let's not spread any more misinformation and fear.
Very safe. If something goes wrong you can just restore and tadah. No bricking like androids.
I can't believe how ignorant this post is. Jailbreaking on iOS = ability to install apps not officially authorized by Apple. This is how you enable that function on a stock Android device. Settings -> Security -> Unknown Sources (Allows installation of non-Market apps) -> put a check in the box. Done. It is IMPOSSIBLE to brick your device by doing that. You must be confused with having the bootloader unlocked and getting root access (2 different things BTW).
As for the OP, I have 3 iPhones, two 3G and one 4 and they are all jailbroken without issue. I have 3 Android phones (Magic, Desire and Sensation) all with unlocked bootloaders, root access and customs ROM's, again, no issues.
Yes jailbreak tweak did cause me to destroy the dock connector of the ipad2. Maybe it was indirectly as the tweak allowed for 3rd party hardware to be used which I wouldn't normally use.
You tweakers have been warned. I'm not saying to avoid tweaks as jb. I'm saying be careful because some tweaks can seriously f-up your idevice.
Unless you got experience don't pretend to speak from experience.
