If you're going from keyboard to touch. Try one out first. I went from a 9800 to a 9860. I like them both, but sometimes I miss the keyboard

It all depends if you want a slide-out keyboard or not. The specs are basically the same, except the 9810 has 8GB or storage whereas the 9860 only has 4GB.

The big issue with the 9810 is that the QWERTY is too compact. I understand that the size of the 9810 makes it hard to have a decent sized QWERTY but I'm not too happy with the keyboard of the 9810. Sometimes it's impossible to type accurately especially with the fingers smash too close to each other.

Have you looked at the more recent Bolds?
You'll get a good sized keyboard, optical d-pad, and touchscreen.

i've been looking at the torches solely because of the screen sizes i have a 9700 right now and i find the screen a tad on the small size (visually impaired) the storage doesnt really make any difference to me since i dont have that many apps for it.

Though 9860 says 4GB storage, actually it is only 2.5GB. No matter how you test it, it is always 2.5GB.
Do a google & you will see that no use has reported 4Gb except RIM
    So 9810 is better...
