Galaxy Nexus not available as hardware upgrade for a while - only new activations.
My wife got on the holiday miracle plan at the end of 2011 and didn't get a phone at the time, waiting to get the Galaxy nexus on the tab+. We went to get it today and were told that Wind is temporarily not allowing people to get the Galaxy Nexus as a hardware upgrade (technically not an upgrade since she never got a phone with the plan anyways - just a sim card but I digress) and are only allowing it on new activations for the next while. Anyone else get that message? Apparently they just did this on Friday the 10th. I'm assuming it is across Wind but want to make sure it wasn't just the kiosk in West Edmonton Mall.
I understand it; Wind wants to make sure they can get the new customers the phone they want and will hold off the people they already got in case inventory runs out. Still, my wife was super disappointed to learn she was going to have to keep using her blackberry for the immediate future. I hope it is just a few weeks.
Too bad you didn't want to buy it outright. All you would do is pay a little extra for the cheapest plan, then cancel it and switch sims.
I definitely understand wanting to use the tab with it though.
I had the same problem . All the wind kiosks were refusing hardware upgrade for me from the first day Wind launched galaxy nexus.
So I called customer service and talk to a very nice lady from retentions. She told me it is not right what private dealers do- and adviced me to go back to the store where they refused to sell me a phone on windtab and call her back. So I did that , called retentions again from the store- same lady had conversation with the j.rk from the kiosk... Now I have my Galaxy Nexus on 2011 HMP on windtab+.
So- do not believe the salesman it is Wind policy!

I totally understand your situation where you were dealing with a private Wind dealer who preferred to keep his GN inventory for new activations.
However, this new policy has just been in place effective today. It applies to ALL Wind locations - corporate stores included, so you will receive the same spiel for the next little while regardless of which location you visit.

Wow, then I'm glad I got into a corporate store on day one. The Yaletown store had a waiting list but I dropped by only minutes after the store opened and they sold me one on Tab+ with my old HMP despite the list.
What happened to WIND having a philosophy of treating all customers equally, regardless of prepaid/postpaid or new/existing?
In any event, this really means that the outright purchase price for existing customers has been temporarily increased by the lowest plan price. For anyone really wanting to purchase the phone from WIND that badly, just activate on the lowest possible price plan on Pay Before and then just throw the sim card out after you've left the store.
Most of the people in this situation affected by the policy would be those still within the 14 days and 30 minutes buyer's remorse period who would prefer returning their existing phone to 'upgrade' (read pay more) to get the Galaxy Nexus at $249.
Those who are looking to buy it outright for $649 are in the vast majority.
Even Apple never did that. You have a phone for sale or you don't. There is a waiting list. But to have a phone only for new activations- that is something only at wind kiosk... or I am missing something-)
On Pay Before- $650- other providers sell it for 600$ no line-ups.
Kijiji sells them for 520$
Why I cant get a hardware upgrade, on Wind tab+ for $250?

Other providers have definitely done this. Apple isn't a provider. They're a manufacturer.

Why buy it for $649 from Wind when you can get it for $599 from Rogers? It's the identical unlocked phone for $50 less... Some dealers may give you a hard time trying to buy a phone outright, but you can easily find a nearby Rogers Plus location that will have no problem with it.
