So I just recently purchased a Motorola Atrix off of CL for a good steal. I've ordered the ATT sim and waiting on that (and for my old prepaid time to expire, why waste money) until I activate it. I'm pretty tech savvy and all that and I've been reading up on the dock. I know it's the best and was expensive, but with CL and ebay these days, I can get one for cheap. I know when purchase through ATT originally, you had to get a tethering plan to use the dock and I've read up that people who bought it after said they would be forced into using one. So my question is with the new settings I'll put in to use with ST, will it not be happy and ask for the tethering feature or might it only work with wifi, which wouldn't be too bad. Anyway, any guidance is help and thanks.
Reviewers on Amazon state that it will work on wi-fi right out of the box, without a tethering plan which is what I would expect......it is unlikely that being on Straight Talk would have any effect on that. Now, to use it with cellular data most likely relies on AT&T tethering pre-installed bloatware. The tethering bloatware won't work with Straight Talk. It may be possible to use it with cellular data if you root your phone and use a third party tethering application, but I wouldn't count on it.
If you do get one, if you don't mind coming back and letting us know how it works out. I would also be interested in this setup (to use over wi-fi at home).
I'm curious about this too. Have the Atrix and love it, but don't know about spending the money on the lapdock. My phone is rooted and tethering is enabled, but never use it. Report back when you get it.

If AT&T has used bloatware to block the lapdock without a tethering plan - you may be able to get around this by flashing the Bell Canada firmware which has very little carrier interference.
Why would one use a cellular phone to share a Wi-Fi connection? Other devices you would connect to the phone should be able to use Wi-Fi directly. One is more likely to use Wi-Fi to share a cellular data connection.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here... the lapdock is an accessory for the Matrix that contains no processor, no radio, no storage, just a keyboard, trackpad and extra battery. You drop the phone in, and you run a Linux OS that's inside the phone firmware. The OP's question is about that, not about any other device .
The device uses an Atrix phone to connect to the cellular data network. That connection can be shared with another device. The Atrix phone can also use Wi-Fi to connect to a data network. If the laptop has Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet, why use the Atrix dock or phone as a go-between?

What do you mean by the "laptop"? The OP didn't say anything about a standalone laptop.
The Atrix lapdock does not have wifi. It has no connectivity whatsoever except for the physical ports that plug into the Atrix.

The Original Poster implied that he was planning to tether without using the Atrix Laptop Dock. If he were planning to use Atrix just in Wi-Fi mode, it would offer more versatility to purchase a net book or laptop with Wi-Fi capability to avoid tying down the phone to a dock.

You and I are clearly not reading the same original post. I have gone over it again word for word... Please re-read it again.
The question is about the fact that when you use the dock on an AT&T Atrix, the carrier bloatware requires you to have subscribed to a tethering plan. I don't see any question about tethering to an actual other device.
Yes, cmstlist is correct. That was what I was asking and also it was a silly thing to debate about when the Atrix launched that a 'tethering' plan was required even though you were using only the phone still to do all your work(on a bigger screen at least). I won't actually be tethering any devices, yet the phone's software I know required that in the past so I was wondering if being on Straight Talk's network would require the same process.
Ok. I have a Atrix 2 and a laptop dock 500 pro that works great with the net10 Sim.
I bought my laptop dock from Verizon the other day for $150. You need to check with Verizon to see if they are still available. It works great with the atrix.
