I've heard this from several places now, and it seems that after belle, we might have lost some image quality.Anyone else notice a difference ? I can see it, but I wish I had another N8 running Anna so I can do a side by side..
If you think that is the case, post in the nokia discussions thread
My opinions on the camera are based mainly on what I've noticed with the image file sizes.
When I first got the N8 with s^3, I cranked the settings to 12mp and left them there. Image file sizes for my pictures were typically 5-8Mb, depending on the picture.
Trying the same type of pictures with the released Belle results in 1-2Mb file.
To me, more compression means more lost image. I think Nokia is dumbing down the N8 camera on purpose. The new win phone Nokias reviews are weak on camera performance, and they don't want to get spanked by old N8's on Belle.
On hacked phones and cfw the NVT camera mod does restore at least most of the camera's performance.
^ I wouldn't be surprised if they did something like that.. very few Nokia decision make much sense lately. Anyway, I asked Dinning on twitter about couple of days ago, and here is what he said
So either he has no idea, and hasn't been involved in the project at all since the Anna update, or..
And, I am actually getting bigger file sizes with belle compared to anna. I got one over 4 mb.. with anna i've never gone over 3 mb
here it is, you can click on it for the original file
yea i was about to say that i've never gone over 3mb for a single picture with anna, unless i used some mod to reduce the compression.
i feel like in Belle, the picture is like 90% of Anna. But what makes it worst to me is the auto focus. sometimes it takes forever, i just take the picture without it fully focused and it's perfectly fine sometimes.
Are you using it with Belle ? I just installed it, and it seems to be having issues with the exposure..it kind of locks into a certain level and it won't auto adjust
I have both CameraPro and CameraPro QT. I prefer the QT version and have no issues using it with Belle.
Thanks! I have the QT version as well, but it does lock the exposure every time I try to focus. Did you update to belle via Nokia Suite, or phoenix flash ?

If you care about the picture quality, i wouldn't recommend it, but even then its still much better than most phones out there..
I'm on a mac and I updated Belle thru Nokia Software Updater. Now that I play with both versions it does seem that CameraPro adjusts much quicker than the QT version with exposures. I believe it was that way before Belle though.
I'd guess that the native camera app could be affected but considering CameraPro does away with the native settings and features it should not be affected by the Belle upgrade.

I have no clue how this works.. but maybe you, or someone else here knows. What is responsible for the picture processing, the camera application, or another process deeper in the OS itself ? I assume its both, but..
If its the application, then we should be able to put on the old Anna camera application (or even older pr 1.x ones if they work on belle) and.. well problem solved ? Its clear that the software has a lot to do with the image quality, the hardware is there, and we all know what the n8 is cable of in terms of imaging. I think this is why their next camera flagship will be Symbian based.. Windows Phone can't handle the hardware that well I guess, otherwise it makes no sense. If it was as simple as just putting the 12 mp sensor from the N8 into a Windows phone they would have done by now..
You'd think they would have kept the GPU for follow up models to the N95, but it was the only or to have it until the N8, so Nokia often does things that make no sense.
