Rapid upgrades are nothing new. Around ten years ago, a Fido executive was interviewed and stated that the average turnover was 18 months.

I can buy any phone I want, but I only upgrade when a new handset comes along that does something far better than my old one, or if an old one gets damaged in some way. Sometimes that means years, or just weeks. I had an original iPhone in 2007, which was a huge leap in useability over everything before. However, being only 2G, I didn't bother to repair it when the touchscreen failed. I just went back to the Blackjack that I had bought the month before getting the iPhone. It had 3G and was much faster for Web surfing, especially on sites that were optimised for mobile devices. Before that, I had a credit-card-sized Samsung P300 for a year. I kept using the BlackJack until last year, when the Nexus S became available. It's the handset that I have been waiting for years -- no-crapware Android experience, 3G, GPS, and no big "doesn't work well as a phone" deal-breakers.

The next upgrade for me will be to get LTE, and maybe something thinner. I'd say ICS too, but the Nexus S can already be upgraded to that for free. I am biding my time until the current crop of faux-4G handsets clears out to make for a good selection of LTE gear. Hopefully some that are more battery-efficient will be available too.
